TV Ratings September 9, 2022: AFL finals behind Seven’s success

Seven’s Friday Night AFL Finals, which saw the Sydney Swans defeat the Melbourne Demons, was the top program on total TV, rising 1% to reach a total audience of 1,171,000.

The Chase on Seven claimed the second top spot for the most-watched non-news program reaching a total audience of 772,000 and increasing by 3%. 

Baptiste on ABC had the biggest lift on overnight with 69% to reach an audience of 364,000.

The AFL finals continue to be the force behind Seven‘s weekend success as the network dominated the Friday shares, taking a 41.6% network share, 29.3% primary share, and 7mate multichannel win of 7.7%.

The top-rated program of the night was 7news with 852,000 views, followed by Seven’s AFL: Friday Night Football Finals with a viewership of 800,000. 439,000 Melbourne fans watched on as The Brisbane Lions defeated Melbourne to claim victory 14.8 (92) to 11.13 (79). The Lions trailed by 28-points late in the first half, but managed to kick 11 goals to five after half-time to secure their win. The post-match coverage clocked 638,000 views, followed by the pre-match coverage with 535,000.

Nine enjoyed 736,000 views on its primetime news coverage, followed by the Rugby League Final Series, which brought in 509,000 views. 313,000 Sydney-siders tuned in to watch the Panthers take on the Eels at BlueBet Stadium to walk away with a 27-8 win. The pre-match coverage clocked 268,000 views. 

The ABC devoted the day to special coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s passing. The top program of the night reflected on her 70+ years of service as Queen, as well as what happens next. The program brought in 201,000 views.

Additionally, all the major Australian TV networks went to air with live coverage of the aftermath of her death early yesterday.

On 10, 10 News First reached 227,000 people, followed by The Project with 189,000 views.

A repeat of Elizabeth was the most-watched program on SBS with 85,000 views.

Fox Footy’s coverage of the Qualifying Finals between Melbourne and Brisbane won the night, bringing in 347,000 viewers. On Fox League, the Qualifying Finals between the Panthers and Eels brought in an audience of 314,000. Fox Footy’s Friday Footy on Fox reached 307,000 viewers, followed by In The Back Pocket with 132,000 viewers.
