TV Guide: Daniil Medvedev V Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open Men’s Final

Australian Open Men's Final

• If Nadal wins, he will make history

The Australian Open is coming to a close for 2022, and the Men’s Singles Final will see Daniil Medvedev take on Rafael Nadal. The match will be played in Rod Laver Arena, kicking off at 7:30pm Sunday, January 30th and available to watch on Nine, 9Now, and Stan Sport.

Russian Daniil Medvedev beat Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Australian Open semifinals, and will now be working towards his second consecutive grand slam title – he won his first major at the 2021 US Open.

The match made headlines after Medvedev launched into an attack on the chair umpire during the break between sets, accusing Tsitsipas of being coached by his father who was in the crowd

“Bro are you mad? His father can talk every point? Are you stupid? His father can talk every point?” Medvedev yelled, eventually concluding with “How can you be so bad in the semi-final of a grand slam? Look at me. Look at me. I’m talking to you.”

Despite his outburst, Medvedev won the match 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Medvedev will have the unenviable task of taking on Spanish powerhouse Rafael Nadal in Sunday’s final, with the sixth seed trying to win his 21st grand slam title. If he pulls it off, he will make history by going one title ahead of both Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

It would be a major turnaround for Nadal who was considering retirement recently, and had been labeled an outsider for the title due to both a foot injury and his recovery from Covid-19 in December.

Despite this, Nadal says he’s not just paying the game for the record. “I just keep going,” Nadal said. “I am just enjoying playing tennis, as I said hundreds of times. But honestly, and from the bottom of my heart … of course I want to keep winning, because I love what I am doing.”
