At the 9Network’s 2022 Upfront the broadcaster made a raft of content announcements that included the rest of the 2021 slate, new programs confirmed for 2022, and also confirmed its returning shows.

Below is a break down of what to expect from Nine over the next 12 months.

Still to Come in 2021

Love Island Australia

A new batch of young singles will search for love and fun in the sun on the third season of Love Island Australia, to be filmed in Byron Bay. Sophie Monk will return to host and play Cupid alongside new addition, comedian Stephen Mullan as narrator.

As always, the Islanders must couple up, stay together, and win over the hearts of the public, all while surviving the temptations of beautiful new singles entering the villa.

Each week, Abbie Chatfield and a bunch of celebrity superfans will dissect all the highs and lows from the show on Afterparty.

Parental guidance

Ally Langdon and Australian parenting expert Dr. Justin Coulson team up with ten sets of parents with very different parenting styles, putting their methods to the ultimate test to determine who has Australia’s best parenting style in Channel 9’s raw and confronting new series, Parental Guidance.

Opinionated parents with diverse parenting techniques will take turns judging each other’s style through a series of challenges designed to put their style to the test.

Snackmasters

Snackmasters is a cooking contest hosted by Scott Pickett and Poh Ling Yeow (MasterChef Australia) where highly awarded chefs at the top of their game go head-to-head to perfectly replicate famous Aussie snacks.

Each week the chefs will cook a selected snack in their own kitchens, before entering the Snack Arena for a cook-off judged by the factory workers who make the snack every day. The chef whose recipe is closest to the original will take home the highly coveted Snack Trophy and bragging rights as a true Snack Master.

Yvie Jones, ex-Goggleboxer and self-confessed snack lover, journeys deep into the food factories to find the secrets that go into the creation of Australia’s favourite snacks and see where the chefs are getting it wrong – and right.

The show will feature snacks like Twisties, Drumsticks, Whoppers and Cadbury Favourites and is based on the BAFTA-nominated UK program format and made by Warner Bros. International Television Production for the 9Network.

Lego Master Christmas

Lego Masters will return later this year for a Lego Christmas.

Australian celebrities will team up with contestants from the past three series in a festive celebration. The Christmas mini-series will feature Scott Cam, Sophie Monk, Brooke Boney and Michael “Wippa” Wipfli

The Hundred with Andy Lee

The Hundred with Andy Lee will find out what Australian really thinks about the most wonderful time of the year – Christmas.

Joining Andy Lee will be regular panellist Mike Goldstein, plus Sophie Monk and Becky Lucas and a certain jolly man facing “The Hundred”.

The Hundred with Andy Lee is an original concept by Screentime Australia and Andy Lee, in association with Channel 9.

Weakest Link

Weakest Link returns for four supercharged episodes in the final quarter of 2021, featuring Australian celebrities and reality contestants.

Magda Szubanski will be back again as host with a cash jackpot of up to $250,000.

Weakest Link has been produced in 46 territories around the world and is produced for the 9Network by BBC Studios Australia.

Country Home Rescue with Shaynna Blaze

In Country Home Rescue, Shaynna Blaze and her children embark on the restoration of a dilapidated historical home in regional Victoria. And navigate through a never- ending maze of problems when their grand plans are sideswiped by building restrictions, frustrating delays and a huge budget blowout.

Taronga: Who’s Who In The Zoo

Later this year viewers will catch a glimpse into nature in the second season of Taronga: Who’s Who In The Zoo on Channel 9.

Centenary Ambassador for Taronga Zoo, Naomi Watts, will return as the narrator, transporting viewers into the world of Taronga. Grappling with the complications thrown up by COVID-19, this season follows the emotional highs and lows experienced by the keepers, vets and volunteers who care for the captivating creatures that call Taronga home.

Taronga: Who’s Who In The Zoo is produced by McAvoy Media for the 9Network and will also return in 2022.

Heart of the Nation, The World’s Largest CPR Class

Heart of the Nation, The World’s Largest CPR Class, will go to air on Channel 9 for the first time next month. Hosted by Richard Wilkins, the broadcast will run in line with the Heart of the Nation charity founded by original Yellow Wiggle and sudden cardiac arrest survivor, Greg Page.

Carols by Candlelight

Australia’s annual Christmas Eve tradition continues this year with Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight, broadcast live from Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Friday, December 24, at 8.00pm on Channel 9 and 9Now. It has also been confirmed to return in 2022.

New in 2022

Underbelly: Vanishing Act

Underbelly returns to Channel 9 with Underbelly: Vanishing Act. The new season will tell the story of the bizarre disappearance of Melissa Caddick who allegedly embezzled over $40 million before vanishing into thin air.

in Buying Byron, highly focused real estate agents working to sell the sexiest real estate on earth. Viewers will get a glimpse into Australia’s most prestigious playground, where the spectacular beaches and seaside glamour set the scene for all the action. There will be beachside deals, tussles for premier property listings, and feuds over negotiations as these agents work to secure a piece of paradise for their prestige clients.

Australia Behind Bars

Australia Behind Bars, presented by Melissa Doyle, offers unprecedented access beyond the high walls and barbed wires of three maximum security prisons.

This powerhouse eight-part series documents the harsh realities of daily life behind bars for inmates and corrections officers alike. The stories are both confronting and compelling, detailing the heartbreak, hell – and hopes – of an existence in prison.

Australian Behind Bars is produced by ITV Studios Australia for the 9Network.

Missing Persons Investigation

For the first time on television, Missing Persons Investigation will go behind-the-scenes to join police and investigators across Australia to find missing loved ones and bring them home. Some of these cases will end in heartbreak, others in the joy of finding a missing loved one.

The show will take viewers inside Australian Federal Police’s ambitious world-first forensics laboratory in Canberra, where the National DNA Program for Unidentified and Missing Persons is underway. And join investigators including world-renowned forensic specialist Dr Jodie Ward, who is now helping to solve cold cases that have remained mysteries, until now.

Million Dollar Murders

Mysterious disappearances. Kidnappings. Hate crimes. Thrill killings. These are the toughest crimes to crack and the most complex become Million Dollar Murders. When there are few leads left to investigate police turn to the public for help to solve these crimes, offering a $1 million reward for new information, from someone, somewhere, who may know something.

Host and recently retired Detective Superintendent Deborah Wallace will use her 30 years of policing experience and insight, working alongside some of the country’s leading detectives, to take viewers inside the investigations of six chilling murder mysteries. Wallace will travel to the crime scenes, dissect the cases with detectives, question witnesses and talk to grieving family members.

Million Dollar Murders is produced by The Full Box for the 9Network.

Returning in 2022

Married at First Sight

Australia’s biggest guilty pleasure and most talked about social experiment, Married at First Sight, returns for its ninth season, bringing a powerful combination of love, passion and emotion to TV screens next year.

Married at First Sight is produced by Endemol Shine Australia for the 9Network.

The BlockThe Block is set for a “tree change” in 2022 for its 18th season.

For the first time, television’s toughest building challenge will head to the bush to transform a set of country houses into someone’s great Australian dream. Host Scott Cam will welcome a new batch of eager Blockheads as they build perfect homes out among the gumtrees.

The Block is a Nine production in conjunction with Cavalier Television.

Lego Masters

Host Hamish Blake and resident judge Ryan “Brickman” McNaught will be joined by eight new couples brimming with creativity and flair. Prepare to be dazzled by more extraordinary challenges when the teams duel it out for the chance to win $100,000 and the title of Lego Masters.

Celebrity Apprentice Australia

Lord Alan Sugar will oversee a new selection of celebrities who will battle it out to avoid the firing line, and the first three steps up to the plate are one of Australia’s most inspirational women, author and athlete, Turia Pitt and comedy radio duo Will and Woody.

Celebrity Apprentice Australia is produced by Warner Bros. International Television Production Australia for the 9Network, based on the format created by Mark Burnett and distributed by MGM.

Beauty and the Geek

With Sophie Monk returning, 10 new beauties and 10 geeks from around Australia will work together through a series of real-life challenges in the search to find a romantic spark or a lifelong friendship.

Australian Ninja Warrior

Australian Ninja Warrior will be supercharged with a whole new attitude and an extreme new course. Nine has promised that the series will see the transformation of the year, pushing the Ninjas into uncharted levels of punishing endurance.

Emergency

Emergency is back for a third series in 2022 with the heroes at the frontline of one of Australia’s busiest hospitals.

Travel Guides

Travel Guides will be returning in 2022 for a sixth season. Narrated by popular Aussie comedian Denise ScottTravel Guides is produced by Nine.

RBT

The new season, narrated by Andrew Daddo, will again capture all the drama and danger police face every day in their relentless campaign against drink and drug driving, while getting a glimpse into their major roadside operations.

RBT is produced by Screentime Australia for the 9Network.

Paramedics

Paramedics will return in 2022 for season four. Paramedics is a WTFN production for the 9Network with the help of Ambulance Victoria.

Millionaire Hot Seat

Millionaire Hot Seat is Australia’s longest-running quiz show and the only program on Australian television offering a $1 million prize.

Space Invaders

In Space Invaders, declutter guru Peter Walsh, renovation queen Cherie Barber and treasure hunter Lucas Callaghan join forces each week to help desperate families declutter

Country House Hunters Australia

Country House Hunters Australia returns in 2022 for a second season on Channel 9, hosted by Getaway’s Catriona Rowntree. Country House Hunters Australia captures the essence of living in the country, shedding light on the properties hidden out of the urban dweller’s sight. 

Getaway

Getaway, Australia’s longest-running and most popular holiday and travel show, will be back for its 31st season in 2022.

Mega Zoo

Mega Zoo returns for a new series in 2022 set across Victoria locations from Melbourne Zoo in the heart of the city to Werribee Open Range Zoo’s savannah and the stunning bushland setting of the Healesville Sanctuary.

News and Current Affairs

Under Investigation with Liz Hayes

From the producers of 60 Minutes, Under Investigation with Liz Hayes returns for its third season in 2022.

A Current Affair

At 7.00pm six nights a week, A Current Affair will continue to be hosted by Tracy Grimshaw Monday to Friday and Deb Knight on Saturday.

60 Minutes

Liz Hayes, Tara Brown, Liam Bartlett, Tom Steinfort, Sarah Abo and Nick McKenzie investigate, analyse, and uncover the biggest issues affecting the nation.

Today

Today hosted by Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon will return alongside entertainment presenter Brooke Boney, news presenter Alex Cullen and weather presenter Tim Davies  Weekend Today with Richard Wilkins and Rebecca Maddern will also return.

Today Extra will screen each weekday from 9.00am. Sylvia Jeffreys has returned after maternity leave, hosting Monday to Thursday alongside David Campbell, while Belinda Russell rounds out the week as co-host.

Sport

Tennis

Nine will start the new year with the ATP Cup and Brisbane International, followed by the Adelaide International. After that comes the Australian Open.

9Network and Stan Sport have also secured the rights to the US Open, delivering all the action live from New York City. This joins Wimbledon, Roland-Garros and the Laver Cup Tennis Tournament in the Nine stable.

NRL

Rugby league returns for its 31st year on Nine in 2022.

Rugby Union

In partnership with the home of rugby, Stan Sport, the 9Network and 9Now will round out 2021 by screening all Wallabies games in The Rugby Championship live from Queensland.

In 2022, the 9Network will continue its commitment to the game with broadcasts of Wallabies and Wallaroos test matches, plus a Super Rugby Pacific match every Saturday night live on 9Gem throughout the season. 

UCI Road World Championships

Returning to Australia for the second time, the 2022 UCI Road World Championships will provide eight days of elite road cycling in Wollongong, New South Wales, with all events broadcast live, ad-free and on-demand on Stan Sport and select events on the 9Network.

Sports Sunday

Host James Bracey leads the panel as they debate and debunk all the big issues of the week in the world of sport.

100% FOOTY

100% Footy, returns to Channel 9 in 2022, hosted by James Bracey and featuring a lineup of experts analysing and debating the hot topics in the game throughout the NRL season.

The NRL Sunday Footy Show

In 2022, The NRL Sunday Footy Show will also kick-off for another season, covering all the action throughout the competition rounds and the finals.

The AFL Sunday Footy Show and Footy Classified

Footy Classified reunites Craig Hutchison, Caroline Wilson, Matthew Lloyd and Kane Cornes in the Monday night timeslot with the Wednesday edition of Footy Classified bringing together Eddie McGuire, Caroline Wilson, Matthew Lloyd and Ross Lyon.

The Sunday Footy Show will be back for its 30th season every Sunday at 10.00am.

Special Events

TV Week Logie Awards

The TV WEEK Logie Awards will return to the Gold Coast in 2022 after a two-year postponement due to COVID-19 restrictions. Channel 9 will broadcast the 62nd celebration of the awards live from The Star on the Gold Coast, bringing viewers an overdue night of glamour and recognition of excellence in Australian television.

ARIA Awards

The prestigious ARIA Awards will be broadcast once more on Channel 9 in 2022, the 36th year of celebrating the best and most popular Aussie music acts of the year with an outstanding showcase of celebrities and industry figures.

The ARIA Awards will take on a new look this year, proceeding as an innovative digital show in November on 9Now. After another turbulent year for the music industry, the awards are a chance to honour the achievements of Australian music’s finest.

9NOW

In 2022 9Now will continue to deliver new content with the addition of exclusive premieres La Brea, Thing About Pam, Chucky and Mr Mayor.

Love Island UK will return alongside new seasons of New Amsterdam, Resident Alien, The Equalizer, Duncanville & Law & Order Organised Crime that will also drop throughout the year.
