Guardian Australia editor Lenore Taylor thanks supporters of digital news brand

The latest data from the global web measurement service Similarweb reveals little change in the ranking of news websites traffic from Australia.

It’s important to note our stats from Similarweb is raw traffic data showing the non-unique number of news website visitors.

The top 10 online news providers list remains unchanged from the October rankings. Abc.net.au and News.com.au take the top two places and remain a long way ahead of the rest of the market. The total visits were down significantly month-on-month for both publishers. The ABC digital traffic plunged over 20m while the visits for the News Corp Australia digital news destination were down over 12m.

The ABC has recently announced an additional 50-plus journalist roles in regional locations as a result of recent deals struck with Facebook and Google.

An agreement was signed with Facebook recently and follows an agreement reached with Google last month. Revenue from both will go towards increasing ABC’s investment in regional and rural journalism across Australia.

Of the remaining news website publishers in the top 10, Yahoo.com was the only one to see growth in total Australian visits.

In the total top 20 there was just one new entry for the month of November. The Melbourne-based New Daily has dropped out of the top 20 and been replaced by CNN.com.

Five of the top 10 are Australian publishers with substantial newsroom operations in Australia. The other five have Australian operations with substantial local content creation at most.

Six of the entries between 11 and 20 are also Australian-based publishers. Of the other four international brands, two are divisions of Yahoo, one is Google News and the other is CNN.

In publishing news recently, News.com.au has teamed up with a legend of cricket and one of Australia’s most revered fast bowlers, Brett Lee, for a weekly podcast that will run over the summer.

News.com.au has an extensive podcast portfolio produced by NewsCast across news, sport, and lifestyle. Recent podcast successes include I’ve Got News For You, Kinda Sorta Dating, I Swear I Never, From The Newsroom and the news.com.au news channel on the Alexa smart speaker.

Guardian Australia editor Lenore Taylor

Guardian editor thanks Australian contributors

As we reported yesterday, at the end of November 2021, the Guardian reported a global total of 1,000,035 digital subscriptions, comprising 419,541 digital subscriptions and 580,494 recurring contributions from supporters in 180 countries around the world.

Guardian Australia editor Lenore Taylor told Mediaweek today: “We’d like to thank our Guardian Australia supporters for contributing to our journalism this year, which goes directly to keeping us open and available to all, without a paywall.

“In 2021, this support sustained vital reporting on Canberra’s #MeToo moment, deaths among gig-economy delivery drivers, government efforts to keep the Great Barrier Reef off the UN’s ‘in danger’ list, the overrepresentation of Indigenous youth in custody, and more.

This global milestone reinforces the need for independent journalism with no shareholders or billionaire owner, where we can work to provide journalism that’s free from political and commercial influence. In our current age of misinformation, this has never mattered more.”
