Michael Cassel Group has announced the appointment of journalist Nathanael Cooper as director, publicity to lead the company’s Australian and global communication campaigns and strategy.

Cooper was previously the executive producer, audio at The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, responsible for the audio strategy and distribution at Australia’s most-read mastheads.

The newly appointed director, publicity also hosted the daily news podcast Please Explain for nearly two years. Under his leadership Nine Publishing also released the No.1 podcast in Australia – Liar, Liar: Melissa Caddick and The Missing Millions.

Cooper was previously the deputy culture editor for The Herald and The Age and published a major investigation into the toxic workplace culture in the Australian music industry and has also held senior editorial positions at News Corp and APN.

As director, publicity, Cooper will be responsible for leading the communications strategy across productions and Michael Cassel Group, developing campaigns for licenced Australian productions and international tours.

Cooper will also guide the PR efforts for new development productions, develop internal communications and oversee charitable giving and business-to-business communications.

Cooper said he was delighted to join Michael Cassel Group after covering the company since its inception.

“It has been thrilling to watch, from the outside, the incredible growth this company has seen in a remarkably short space of time. To have the opportunity to be in the room where it happens is a great honour,” he said. 

“I became a journalist to share my love of theatre with other people, I am excited to continue doing that in a whole new way,” Cooper added.

Deeta Colvin will continue to oversee corporate communications and corporate relations for the entertainment company.

Effective immediately, Cooper will be based in Sydney.
