“The great thing about hot is it can be creative and destructive at the same time”

In this-new industry HOT List of 2023, Mediaweek Marketing & Agency Editor-At-Large and Founder and CEO of TrinityP3 Marketing Management Consultants, Darren Woolley highlights and acknowledges the media and creative agencies, the industry bodies and industry events turning up the heat.

The great thing about hot is it can be creative and destructive at the same time. It can be comforting like a bowl of hot soup or the heat in your morning coffee, or destructive like a bushfire or fireworks exploding. Properly harnessed and directed, hot can transform the world. This month’s Hot List is the start of something transformative and explosive.

Criteria for making the Mediaweek Hot Lists
• Making a difference to clients, staff, the industry, and society at large
• Breakthrough campaign or idea that is a category game changer
• Challenging the status quo to drive innovation.

Sizzling HOT
Creative agencies

Special Group

Special Group campaign for Uber Eats has been rightly recognised for creativity and effectiveness. But this latest iteration of the “Get Almost Anything’ campaign with Harry Potter star Tom Felton knocks it out of the park.

If you have not had the pleasure of watching it, you can here.

But more impressively, in a highly competitive category, it rated extremely well on the System1 Group ‘Test Your Ad’ coming in 6th globally for the category and having an exceptional spike rating for short term sales, essential in the food delivery category. Check out the System1 Test Your Ad Pro Report here.

Very Hot
Industry Bodies

Australian Marketing Institute (AMI)

The AMI has been busy up there in St Leonards, with a new visual identity developed by Hulsbosch, but more importantly, the launch of Australia’s first ‘AMI Marketers’ Competency Framework’, designed to equip marketing professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge required to excel in today’s changing business landscape.

The ‘AMI Marketers’ Competency Framework’ for professional career marketers, is a comprehensive guideline outlining 25 competencies across 5 levels of proficiencies. Congratulations to Bronwyn Powell, Chief Executive Officer and Chair, Andrew Thornton. We look forward to seeing the impact as it starts rolling out next month.

HOT
Media Agencies

Advertising Associates

Melbourne Indie media agency Advertising Associates proved again that indies can compete extremely well against often larger network and holding company agencies when Kia awarded them the remainder of their media business out of Havas Media.

The reported $12 million digital media account follows on from Advertising Associates being appointed to the Kia media account with a reported $22 million media account in 2020 without a pitch. While there are those cynics that may suggest this was simply a client aligning their business into one agency, the fact is, it is proof that developing strong relationships with your clients will pay off.

Also HOT
Industry Events

SXSW Sydney

Okay, so as I write this SXSW Sydney has completed the third day of a week-long event. The first SXSW event outside of the USA. But let’s be honest, the circus has come to town. Technology, Music, Film, Gaming and Marketing all intersect in the Darling Harbour / ICC / Pyrmont area. This is the hot ticket to have this month for anyone in marketing, media, and advertising.

Barring a few technical and organisational hiccups (to be expected considering the scale), the program and attendance is incredible. The SXSW veterans talk about the fantastic community spirit in Austin. It will be interesting to see if the same build here in Sydney. Only time will tell.
