Junkee Media has announced it has agreed terms with Facebook on the renewal of its daily news show, The Junkee Takeaway, for a third season.

The three-year deal will see Junkee produce 240 episodes of The Junkee Takeaway for Facebook Watch each year, significantly expanding Junkee Media’s reach and impact, and cementing its place as Australia’s number one youth publisher.

Launched in 2019, The Junkee Takeaway attracts a hard-to-reach youth audience by going beyond the headlines to give young Australians a deeper look at the stories and issues that matter to them – from politics and pop culture to science, sexuality and social justice issues. Each edition of The Junkee Takeaway runs for three to five minutes, and is hosted and produced by Elfy Scott and Claire Keenan.

In its first 200 episodes, the show attracted more than 200 million views on Facebook Watch, including more than 400,000 views in a single day.

Rob Stott (pictured), Junkee Media’s editorial director, said he hoped to continue expanding Junkee Media’s reach and impact for young Australians as part of the continuing relationship with Facebook.

“I’m so pleased that Facebook has committed to renewing its partnership with Junkee Media. This agreement will allow Junkee to make significant investments in public interest journalism, which will help us reach new audiences and tell the stories that matter to young Australians on a scale that will have real impact.”

Junkee Media CEO Neil Ackland said the agreement was a sign of Junkee’s strength as Australia’s number one youth publisher.

The Junkee Takeaway team have hit on a winning formula when it comes to producing video content that resonates with young Australians, and this agreement provides an enormous opportunity to expand the show’s footprint into new and exciting places.”

Facebook Australia’s News Partnerships Lead, Andrew Hunter, said: “We are proud to continue our support for The Junkee Takeaway as it builds on the success of its first two seasons and evolves its news story telling on Facebook.”

The Junkee Takeaway will return to Facebook Watch in August this year.
