Box Office: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings takes #1

• Making a reappearance in the top five is Disney’s Jungle Cruise

This week the Australian box office made $3.59 million, up 38% from last week’s $2.59 million.

The only new addition to the top five this week is the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. 

Filming originally began on the film in February 2020, but like most projects from last year, it was put on hold in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Production resumed in August before ending in October, with some of the additional shooting taking place in Sydney.

Making a reappearance in the top five after previously dropping out is Disney’s Jungle Cruise.

Dropping out this week are the two horror films that debuted last week – Candyman and Don’t Breathe 2.

#1, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, $1.95 million

The 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the only film this week to crack the million mark. It averaged an impressive $7,435 across 262 screens in its opening week.

#2, Free Guy, $604,822

After holding the top spot for a few weeks now, Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy has dropped to second place. Averaging $3,804 across 159 screens, the film has made a total of $4.57 million.

#3, The Suicide Squad, $190,634

In its fifth week of release, The Suicide Squad drops to third. Having made a total of $4.90 million, this week it averaged $1,658 across 115 screens. 

#4, Respect, $152,695

A biographical drama based on the life of American singer Aretha Franklin, this week the story of the Queen of Soul averaged $1,262 across 121 screens to bring the film to a total of $956,713.

#5, Jungle Cruise, $111,926

Reappearing on the list this week after dropping out previously, Disney’s Jungle Cruise averaged $1,142 across 98 screens this week. In its sixth week of release, it has made a total of $3.54 million.
