Box Office: Don’t Breathe 2 and Candyman bring the frights to the chart

This week the Australian box office made $2.59 million, down 17% from last week’s $3.10 million.

Entering the top five this week are Don’t Breathe 2 and Candyman.

Don’t Breathe 2 is the sequel to 2016’s Don’t Breathe. Set eight years after the events of the first film, Norman Nordstrom – The Blind Man from the original movie – is now living with 11-year-old Phoenix and his Rottweiler, Shadow.

Candyman is also a sequel, this time to the iconic 1992 film starring Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd (who both make an appearance in the 2021 film). The 2021 take on the legend is the latest film from Oscar-winner Jordan Peele. He also has an upcoming horror film, Nope, scheduled for release in 2022.

Dropping out of the top five this week are Jungle Cruise after five weeks, and The Night House.

#1, Free Guy, $887,365

The highest earning film this week, Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi as characters inside a video game. This week it pulled in an average of $4,985 over 178 screens for a total of $3.79 million.

#2, The Suicide Squad, $390,094

In its fourth week of release, The Suicide Squad holds its position in second. Having made a total of $4.63 million, this week it averaged $2,747 across 142 screens. 

#3, Respect, $239,460

A biographical drama based on the life of American singer Aretha Franklin, this week the story of the Queen of Soul averaged $2,029 across 118 screens to bring the film to a total of $710,211.

#4, Don’t Breathe 2, $160,597

A whole new set of horrors await fans of the 2016 film in this sequel. Don’t Breathe 2 averaged $1,559 over 103 screens this week. 

#5, Candyman, $148,050

The latest horror from the mind of Jordan Peele, his take on Candyman averaged $1,437 over 103 screens this week.
