Box Office: Marvel’s Shang-Chi holds top spot in a quiet week

This week the Australian box office made $2.80 million, down 22% from last week’s $3.59 million.

The top five this week have remained entirely unchanged from last week, in a quiet week for the Box Office.

Last week the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings debuted to number one, where it has stayed steady this week.

Filming originally began on the film in February 2020, but like most projects from last year, it was put on hold in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Production resumed in August before ending in October, with some of the additional shooting taking place in Sydney.

#1, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, $1.40 million

The 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the only film this week to crack the million mark. It averaged an impressive $5,663 across 248 screens. This brings it to a total of $4.07 million.

#2, Free Guy, $494,080

Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy has stayed steady in second place after dropping down from first last week. Averaging $2,458 across 201 screens, the film has made a total of $5.18 million.

#3, The Suicide Squad, $152,034

In its sixth week of release, The Suicide Squad holds third place. Having made a total of $5.01 million, this week it averaged $1,063 across 143 screens. 

#4, Respect, $132,669

A biographical drama based on the life of American singer Aretha Franklin, this week the story of the Queen of Soul averaged $850 across 156 screens to bring the film over the million mark. It has made a total of $1.15 million.

#5, Jungle Cruise, $93,704

Reappearing on the list last week after dropping out previously, Disney’s Jungle Cruise averaged $744 across 126 screens this week. In its seventh week of release, it has made a total of $3.65 million.
