Box Office: Respect biopic sees Aretha Franklin hit the charts once again

This week the Australian box office made $3.08 million, down 20% from last week’s $3.86 million.

Entering the top five this week is Respect, a biographical drama based on the life of American singer Aretha Franklin. Directed by Liesl Tommy and originally coming from a screenplay written by Tracey Scott Wilson, Jennifer Hudson steps into the starring role and takes the lead as the iconic The Queen of Soul.

Also cracking the top five is The Night House, a psychological horror starring Rebecca Hall as a widow who discovers a dark secret about the house her late husband built. Originally the film was set to be released back in July of this year, but it was delayed due to the ongoing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Dropping out of the top five this week are two films. Space Jam: A New Legacy finally falls off the list after an impressive six weeks since release, and Liam Neeson‘s The Ice Road which debuted to fifth position last week.

#1, Free Guy, $1.14 million

The only film this week to go over a million, Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi. This week it pulled in an average of $5,297 over 216 screens for a total of $2.66 million.

#2, The Suicide Squad, $650,368

In its third week of release, The Suicide Squad drops from top of the list to second. Having made a total of $4.11 million, this week it averaged $3,459 across 188 screens. 

#3, Respect, $342,787

Telling the story of The Queen of Soul, Respect averaged $2,448 across 140 screens in its debut week. 

#4, Jungle Cruise, $226,210

Jungle Cruise sails along happily in its fourth week of release. Having made a total of $3.17 million so far, this week it averaged $1,459 across 155 screens.

#5, The Night House, $158,266

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January, The Night House averaged $1,439 across 110 screens in its first week.
