Lifting from third to first place, it’s the fourth week in cinemas for Sony’s Australian-based romcom, Anyone But You. Over the weekend, it took $1,696,060, down 18% and averaging $4,634 over 366 cinemas.
Anyone But You has now made $16,010,545 to date.
Synopsis: Despite an amazing first date, Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben’s (Glen Powell) initial attraction quickly turns sour. However, when they unexpectedly find themselves at a destination wedding in Australia, they pretend to be the perfect couple to keep up appearances.
2. Wonka – $1,690,711
Staying steady at number two was Warner Bro’s Wonka. For its sixth weekend in cinemas, the Timothée Chalamet-led film took $1,690,711, averaging $4,658 over 363 cinemas and down 24% from last week.
Wonka has now made $34,479,234 to date.
Synopsis: With dreams of opening a shop in a city renowned for its chocolate, a young and poor Willy Wonka (Chalamet) discovers that the industry is run by a cartel of greedy chocolatiers. The film also stars Hugh Grant, Rowan Atkinson and Matt Lucas.
3. Mean Girls – $1,648,359
Paramount’s Mean Girls debuted in the number-one last weekend, dropping to third this week. Bringing in $1,648,359 locally, the film averaged $4,080 over 404 screens.
The new instalment, which was adapted from the 2018 Tony-nominated Broadway musical, is an adaptation of the 2004 film starring Lindsay Lohan. When it first arrived in cinemas, Mean Girls took $24.4M globally; however, given that was almost two decades ago, adjusted for inflation, that equates to approx $40M.
Synopsis: New student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed by the popular girls at her new school, in a group called the Plastics, led by Regina George (Reneé Rapp). Things go south for Cady when she falls for Regina’s ex-boyfriend.
4. The Beekeeper – $1,442,251
Also staying steady this week is Roadshow’s The Beekeeper, in fourth place after making its debut was last week. The Jason Statham-led film took $1,442,251, averaging $4,608 over 313 screens.
Synopsis: One man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after it’s revealed he’s a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as Beekeepers.
5. Migration – $1,112,587
Rounding out the top five for another week was Universal’s Migration, the animated family flick. The film took $1,112,587, down 17% and averaging $3,543 over 314 screens.
Synopsis: A family of ducks leaves the safety of a New England pond for an adventurous trip to Jamaica. However, their well-laid plans quickly go awry when they get lost and wind up in New York City. The experience soon inspires them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends, and accomplish more than they ever thought possible.
