ARIA Charts: Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR lands her at the top of both charts

• Rodrigo becomes the first artist to top both charts since Justin Bieber

Moving up one spot, Good 4 U by Olivia Rodrigo hits #1 on the ARIA singles chart. It becomes the American artist’s second chart-topper after Drivers License dominated the beginning of the year. On top of her new #1 single and the #1 debut of her album SOUR, Rodrigo hits a new peak at #3 with previous single Deja Vu, climbs from #19 to #5 with Drivers License, and scores seven debuts in this week’s top 50, including Traitor at #7. 

The last artist to have four or more singles in the top ten was Taylor Swift, who had five on the chart in the week commencing August 3rd 2020.

The top rating Australian artist this week is The Kid Laroi in #8 with the new remix of his song Without You featuring Miley Cyrus. This week marks the 25th week the song has been in the charts.

K-pop superstars BTS claim their third top ten entry on the ARIA singles chart as they debut at #6 with Butter. It’s the group’s second English-language single after Dynamite which peaked st #2 last August. The video for Butter surpassed 200 million views on YouTube in four days and one hour. The track set the new record for largest single-day streams of any song ever on Spotify with 20.9 million streams globally.

London DJ and producer Majestic hits this week’s singles chart with his remix of Boney M’s Rasputin coming in at #47. The remix was released after the track resurged in popularity via TikTok. The track, which originally peaked at #1 in Australia for two weeks in 1978, has been used in over 4 million videos on the social media platform.

Melbourne singer-songwriter Vance Joy returns to the ARIA top 50 for the first time in three years as he releases Missing Piece, coming in at #48. The track becomes the first chart appearance by the two-time ARIA Award winner since Saturday Sun in June 2018.

Also entering the singles chart this week is Build A Bitch by Bella Poarch at #36.

Albums

American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo lands at #1 on the ARIA albums chart with SOUR. Rodrigo’s debut album features the chart-topping singles Drivers License and Good 4 U, which hits #1 this week. It also includes the top tens Deja Vu and Traitor. Ten of SOUR’s eleven tracks appear in this week’s ARIA Top 50.

Rodrigo becomes the first artist to top both charts since Justin Bieber did it in mid-April 2021 with Justice and Peaches. She’s the first female solo artist to top both charts since Taylor Swift did it with evermore and Willow in December 2020.

The highest ranking Australian album this week comes from Brisbane rock luminaries Powderfinger, returning to the top ten for the second time in under a year with One Night Lonely at #4. The album captures the socially-distanced one-off reunion from the 18-time ARIA Award winners in May 2020 in aid of music industry charity Support Act. 

Simpsons-inspired Melbourne doom rock band Dr. Colossus score their first ARIA albums chart entry with I’m A Stupid Moron With An Ugly Face And A Big Butt And My Butt Smells And I Like To Kiss My Own Butt coming in at #16. It’s the group’s second album, coming nearly four years on from their 2017 debut, The Dank. Dr. Colossus will be touring in support of the album in June.

The soundtrack to the Eurovision Song Contest Rotterdam 2021 hits this week’s chart at #23. The album features all 39 participating songs including Montaigne’s entry for Australia, Technicolour, and Italy’s Måneskin with their winning song Zitti e buoni. Eurovision soundtracks have appeared in the top 50 every year for the last ten years, including last year when Covid cancelled the competition itself, with Eurovision 2020 – A Tribute To The Artists And Songs.

Other new entries to the albums chart this week are P!nk with All I Know So Far: Setlist at #2 and Twenty One Pilots with Scaled And Icy at #3. My Bloody Valentine have two new entries with Loveless at #6 and Isn’t Anything at #45.
