ARIA Charts: Harry Styles #1, Kate Bush goes running up those charts

Harry StylesAs It Was notches up its seventh week at #1 on the ARIA singles chart. After scoring 13 entries in the top 15 last week, this week the former One Direction member has 13 releases across the top 40, including three in the top ten, with Late Night Talking at #5 and Matilda at #9.

Kate Bush’s 1985 single Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) has scored a new singles chart peak, as it re-enters at #2. Originally released as the first single from the album Hounds Of Love, the track peaked at #6 in November 1985. The resurgence in popularity of the song comes on the back of its inclusion in a pivotal scene in the fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things.

As he tours the country, Sydney’s The Kid Laroi has shot up the charts. His track Thousand Miles has jumped from #20 to #6 this week (making it the highest ranked Australian single) while previous chart topper Stay has jumped from #18 to #7.

American rappers Kanye West and XXXTentacion debut at #21 with True Love. Originally appearing on West’s Donda 2 album, it’s slated to feature on the upcoming posthumous XXXTentacion album, Look at Me: The Album. True Love samples the previous West single Runaway.

Scottish producer Calvin Harris hits the singles chart for the first time since 2020 with the Dua Lipa and Young Thug-featured Potion at #32. It’s the first single released from Harris’s upcoming sixth studio album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2. He last appeared on the chart with Over Now at #17 in September 2020, a collaboration with The Weeknd.

Sleepy Hallow takes out his second top 50 entry with Die Young at #48. The track comes a year after the American rapper made his debut with 2055.

Albums

Harry Styles scores a second week at #1 with his third album, Harry’s House. Of the British star’s previous two chart-toppers, Harry Styles spent one week at #1 and Fine Line spent three weeks at #1. 

Brisbane’s Ball Park Music score their third #2 album on the ARIA charts with Weirder & Weirder, giving them the top ranked Australian album this week. The group’s seventh album is the follow-up to their self-titled sixth album, which earned them three ARIA Awards nominations in 2021. Weirder & Weirder is Ball Park Music’s sixth top ten album.

Def Leppard takes out their fifth ARIA top ten album with Diamond Star Halos at #3. The twelfth album from the rock veterans is their first since Def Leppard peaked at #4 seven years ago. Named after a line from T. Rex’s Bang a Gong (Get It On), Diamond Star Halos is the band’s homage to glam rock, one of their biggest influences.

Daniel JohnsFutureNever climbs up ten spots to #4 in its sixth week in the top 50. The jump by the former #1 comes on the back of heavy sales of the album on cassette. So far in 2022, FutureNever has been the only Australian album to spend three weeks in top five, the only Australian Album to sit in the top ten for 4 weeks, the only Australian Album to hit #1 after its debut release week, the only Australian Album to occupy the ARIA top two for two weeks and the only Australian Album to occupy the ARIA top 15 for six weeks.

Former Oasis front man Liam Gallagher claims a new solo peak on the ARIA Charts as C’mon You Know debuts at #5. The follow-up to Why Me? Why Not. is Gallagher’s third solo album. To coincide with the new studio album, Gallagher also released the live album – Down by the River Thames

Ed Sheeran’s = climbs back from #11 to #7 following the release of a Tour Edition. The new version of the former #1 features an additional ten tracks including The Joker and the Queen with Taylor Swift, 2step with Lil Baby, and Bad Habits featuring Bring Me the Horizon.

#10: Tate McRae ‘I Used To Think I Could Fly’ – Releasing her debut album, I Used To Think I Could Fly, Canadian singer-songwriter Tate McRae make her albums chart debut at #10. The album features the singles She’s All I Wanna Be and Chaotic. McRae released two EPs prior to the album.

The soundtrack to Top Gun: Maverick debuts this week at #11. The album includes tracks by Hans Zimmer, OneRepublic, and Lady Gaga, plus Kenny Loggins’ Danger Zone (which peaked at #14 in September 1986) from the original film. One single has been released from the album: Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand. The soundtrack to the original Top Gun this week returns to the chart at #47.

Following a reissue to mark its 20th anniversary, Eminem’s The Eminem Show re-enters the chart at #34. The new version features previously unreleased tracks and instrumentals as bonuses. The album has spent a total of seven weeks at #1, with the first week being June 2002.

Australian singer-songwriter/musician/comedian Tom Cardy returns to the chart at #49 with his debut album, Artificial Intelligence. Debuting at #40 in August 2021, the album climbs back up this week on the back of its release on vinyl. This has resulted in it hitting #3 on the vinyl albums chart.
