ARIA Charts: Ed Sheeran makes it five from five with = at #1

• Elton John claims record-breaking #1 single

Singles

Cold Heart (PNAU Remix) by Elton John & Dua Lipa hits #1 on the ARIA singles chart. Debuting at #7 in late August, the track has spent all of its twelve weeks on the chart in the top ten, including five straight weeks at #2. It becomes Elton John’s first #1 single in Australia since Something About the Way You Look Tonight / Candle in the Wind 1997 in September 1997. At 74 years, 7 months and 14 day, the legendary singer-songwriter becomes the oldest artist to hit the top of the ARIA singles chart, overtaking Paul McCartney. It’s Dua Lipa’s first ARIA singles chart #1, after having eight previous top ten entries.

As well as topping the albums chart this week with =, Ed Sheeran has also made significant moves on the singles chart. The album’s second single Shivers has jumped up three spots to hit a new peak at #2. The English singer-songwriter has also grabbed debuts this week with Overpass Graffiti at #8, First Times at #31, and Tides at #43. Meanwhile, Visiting Hours, his tribute to the late Michael Gudinski, has re-entered at #29.

Despite Sydney’s PNAU being the ones to remix the current #1 single, the highest charting Australian artist this week is The Kid Laroi with Stay. His single with Justin Bieber spent 14 weeks straight at the top of the chart before it was taken over by Adele’s Easy On Me. This week Stay comes in at #5.

American duo The Anxiety move up one spot to hit #10 with Meet Me At Our Spot. Its move comes eight weeks into its run in ARIA top 50. The track comes from the self-titled debut album by the pair – Willow Smith and Tyler Cole – which was released in March 2020. In recent times, it’s become a popular song on TikTok.

#20: NEIKED & Mae Muller Feat. Polo G ‘Better Days’ – Swedish producer NEIKED and English singer-songwriter Mae Muller make their top 50 debuts as they hit #20 with the Polo G-featured collaboration Better Days. The track has already hit the top 50 in the US, New Zealand and Ireland.

Albums

English pop superstar Ed Sheeran scores his fifth #1 album on the ARIA charts as he debuts in the top spot with =. Pronounced “equals”, the follow-up to the collaborative album No.6 Collaborations Project, which topped the chart in 2019, is the singer-songwriter’s fifth studio album and the fourth in his symbol series after 2012’s +, 2014’s x, and 2017’s ÷. All four symbol series albums have topped the ARIA album chart. = features the top ten tracks Bad Habits, Visiting Hours, Shivers, and Overpass Graffiti.

The highest rating Australian album this week is last week’s #1, Rüfüs Du Sol’s Surrender at #5. The Sydney group’s fourth studio album comes three years on from Solace, which peaked at #2.

Dami Im takes out her fifth ARIA top 50 entry as she debuts at #12 with My Reality. It’s the X Factor winner and Eurovision runner-up’s sixth album, coming more than three years on from I Hear A Song. She recently competed on Celebrity MasterChef.

Releasing Hushed And Grim, their first album in four years, American metal band Mastodon claim their sixth ARIA top 50 entry at #16. The group’s eighth album is a double album and serves as the follow-up to Emperor of Sand, which gave them their highest peak in Australia at #3.

Debuting at #18, Melbourne indie rock legends Even take out their highest ever chart peak and their first top 50 appearance in 20 years with Reverse Light Years at #18. The trio’s eighth album comes three years on from 2018’s Satin Returns and marks their first double album. Even last appeared in the ARIA top 50 with their third album, A Different High in 2001.

American indie rockers The War On Drugs take out their third career chart entry as they debut at #21 with I Don’t Live Here Anymore. The fifth album from the Philadelphia group is their first studio release since A Deeper Understanding hit #5 in September 2017.

Released on Halloween, Limp Bizkit has released their sixth studio album, Still Sucks. Coming in at #35, it’s Limp Bizkit’s first album in a decade following 2011’s Gold Cobra.

The sixteenth album from Tori Amos, Ocean to Ocean, comes in at #46. She wrote and recorded the album while in lockdown in Cornwall, saying she was inspired by both her fascination with “the county’s landscapes and ancient myths”, and her reaction to the US Capitol riots in January 2021.
