ARIA Charts: Drake hits #1 and breaks Kanye’s records from last week

Drake

• Nine weeks at #1 for The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber

Singles

The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber hold on to the #1 spot on the ARIA singles chart for a ninth straight week with Stay. The second #1 single for Sydney rapper The Kid Laroi hits equal second spot on the list of most weeks at #1 on the ARIA singles chart for track by an Australian artist, joining Justice Crew’s Que Sera in May 2014. Tones And I’s Dance Monkey, which hit #1 in August 2019, is the current record holder with 24 weeks.

Debuting at #1 on this week’s ARIA albums chart with Certified Lover Boy, Drake hits the singles chart with 20 of the album’s tracks. The Canadian rapper has five tracks in this week’s top ten: Girls Want Girls (#2), Fair Trade (#3), Champagne Poetry (#6), Way 2 Sexy (#7) and Papi’s Home (#8). Further down the chart, there’s Love All (#12), Knife Talk (#13), In The Bible (#14), Tsu (#16), No Friends In The Industry (#18), N 2 Deep (#19), Pipe Down (#23), 7am On Bridle Path (#28), Race My Mind (#29), IMY2 (#33), Fountains (#36), Yebba’s Heartbreak (#38), You Only Live Twice (#40), Get Along Better (#41) and F**king Fans (#46).

The 20 tracks from Drake break the records for most debuts in the top 50 in one week and most debuts in the top 50 in one week set by Kanye West last week.

Legendary Swedish band ABBA return with their first new music in four decades. Don’t Shut Me Down at #27 and I Still Have Faith In You at #39 are the first two singles released from the quartet’s ninth album, Voyage, set for release on 5 November. It’s the first time ABBA have charted in Australia with new material since they hit #48 in December 1982 with The Day Before You Came. The band last appeared on the chart when Mamma Mia re-entered at #48 in July 2008. On the albums chart, the career-spanning compilation ABBA Gold & More has re-entered at #18.

This week marks 40 weeks in the top 50 for two previous chart toppers – The Kid Laroi’s Without You with Miley Cyrus and Triple J Hottest 100 winner Heat Waves by Glass Animals.

Albums

Drake nabs his fourth #1 album on the ARIA charts as he debuts in the top spot with Certified Lover Boy. The Canadian hip hop star’s sixth album is his first since Scorpion hit #1 in July 2018, and features contributions from Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Travis Scott, Future, Young Thug, Yebba, 21 Savage and more. Between albums, Drake charted with the compilation Care Package at #7 in August 2019 and the mixtape Dark Lane Demo Tapes at #1 in May 2020. He first hit #1 with Views in May 2016.

The highest-ranking Australian album this week comes from Sydney hip hop group Bliss N Eso, with The Sun at #5. Their first album in four years is the follow-up to Off The Grid and includes collaborations with Chillinit, Dizzee Rascal and Kasey Chambers

Heavy metal legends Iron Maiden claim their third straight top five album as Senjutsu debuts at #3. The British band’s 17th studio album comes six years on from The Book Of Souls hit #2 in September 2015 and, like its predecessor, is a double album. Iron Maiden’s first top five album in Australia was with The Final Frontier at #2 in August 2010.

American band Imagine Dragons score their fifth ARIA top ten album as they hit #10 with Mercury – Act 1 at #10. The follow-up to Origins was executive produced by Rick Rubin. All four of the previous four Imagine Dragons albums peaked at #4.

Guy Sebastian re-enters the chart at #12 with his former #1 album T. R. U. T. H. It comes on the back of The Voice coach’s performance of the new single Believer on the most recent episode of the show.

South Korean boy band Stray Kids make their top 50 debut as they hit #14 with NOEASY. The eight-member group’s second album comes just over a year on from their debut, Go Live. Both albums have topped the charts in South Korea and hit the top ten in Japan. First dropping in mid-August, NOEASY is hitting the top 50 now after its release on CD.

Coming in at #49 this week, No.6 Collaborations Project by Ed Sheeran marks its 100th week in the top 50.
