3m+ watching: Storm and Demons unstoppable in Friday Night Footy finals

TV ratings: Massive footy crowds tune in

A national football audience of 2.871m were watching Friday night AFL and NRL football finals last night. Factor in the streaming audience and the number would be over 3m.

Seven

The final Friday night of the AFL season saw Seven again with huge winning shares. The network was a clear leader on 41.6%, almost double Nine’s network share. Seven’s primary share was a dominant 30.2% and 7mate was on 6.6%.

In Melbourne Seven’s primary share was 48.0%, Adelaide was 38.5% and in Perth, where the match was on 7mate, the share was 31.0%.

The AFL had a massive audience and the first Preliminary Final was the biggest match of the year as The Demons, a team that couldn’t pull a TV audience in previous years, continue to be a magnet for viewers with a metro audience of 1.012m, 632,000 in Melbourne. Elsewhere on the network last night Better Homes and Gardens was on 353,000 screening on Seven and 7TWO.

Nine

Melbourne Storm looked like securing their Preliminary Finals spot early during the match against the Sea Eagles. The Nine metro audience was 519,000. The breakdown saw 266,000 in Sydney, 151,000 in Brisbane and 88,000 in the winning team’s home town. See below for regional and Fox League crowds.

The Project 7pm attracted the biggest audience with 406,000. 10 News First just made the top 20 with 312,000.

The Living Room still managed to just crack 300,000 despite two live football finals elsewhere. The episode a week ago was on 311,000.

ABC

ABC News was the primary channel champ on 627,000.

Gardening Australia was over 400,000 and the Midsomer Murders repeat did 336,000.

SBS

Secrets of Egypt’s Valley of the Kings on 144,000 narrowly outrated SBS World News at 6.30pm on 143,000.
