Victoria Devine: “We should be giving them concepts of investing”

Victoria Devine’s She’s On the Money podcast may be aimed at millennials, but she has a genius parenting hack to teach your kids how to save and be a part of the decision-making process.

Speaking on Mediaweek and Chattr’s The Entertainment Hotline Podcast, the money mogul said: “These are the conversations that that in primary education we should be having”.

“You can implement these things with pocket money,” she said. “And when I have kids, I absolutely will be doing this. I’ll be like, ‘Alright, you have $10.00 a week pocket money and $3.00 of that goes to Family Tax.

“At the end of every quarter, we’re going to have a good discussion about what we do with that Family Tax and how we spend it. Then one day, we’ll sit down and say: ‘We have $50 of Family Tax sitting here. What do you think we should be spending this on as a family?’ And, this is where kids get to be involved in decision-making.”

The author, who recently announced she is pregnant with her first child, then said that “as you get closer to that 13/14-year-old age where they’re thinking about getting their first jobs, we should be talking about superannuation.

“We should be giving them concepts of investing and how they work, not necessarily because a 13-year-old is going to become a millionaire and have a full-time job, but these are when these things start to impact us.”

Adding that in High school she only learned trigonometry, and not about the important life skills of tax and super, she said: “I had no financial literacy on that at all because it just wasn’t talked about. It’s not because we’re not smart enough to comprehend it. It’s just because it’s not part of the curriculum.”

She’s on the Money re-brand

The Zella founder’s initial brand and subsequent podcast, She’s on the Money, is the number one finance podcast in Australia and for good reason. It’s a “no-BS approach to financial literacy that will help you feel confident and in control of your money and future”, aimed predominantly at women.

As for how it came to be, Devine admits it was a happy “accident”, starting with a Facebook group in 2016 before going into the pod space with only 12 episodes, before quickly becoming the trusted platform it is today.

“It comes from a place of wanting everybody to have access to financial literacy,” she said. “We call ourselves the podcast for millennials who want financial freedom. It’s about really helping our community understand that financial freedom isn’t becoming a millionaire, it’s actually just about even sometimes having that basic understanding of money.”

After using the same logo which had been built as a DIY project on PowerPoint by Devine herself at the beginning of her journey, the entire brand has undergone a “glow-up”.

“I still love that brand,” she said. “I think it’s just reflective of where we were and what it was. But I just got to a point where I was like, ‘You know what, I think it’s time that we invested in rebranding, not too far from who we were, but I want punchy colours and something that just feels a lot more 2023.”

She continued: “It’s slow steps in the right direction to kind of free us up to be more successful. And I’m not shy about what we’re doing or how it works. Because I think ultimately, we’re having a really good impact on women and financial literacy.”
