TV ratings Week 29 2021: Origin week again a winner for Nine

Sport continues to be key in leading broadcasters to the top of the TV ratings podium

Seven threw out the TV ratings challenge to Nine during Origin 3 week, but Nine held on to rank #1 primary channel and #1 network. It was the third consecutive winning week for Nine.

The MasterChef final lifted 10, with the channel’s best result in six weeks.

Beauty and the Geek 2021

TV ratings: Nine 21.1% primary share, 29.1% network share

Sport continues to be key in leading broadcasters to the top of the TV ratings podium. Last week it was Nine on top thanks in part to the success of Ash Barty at Wimbledon. This week it has been the surge of viewing from both Origin 3, and to a lesser extent, the success of the rugby union telecast of the Australia v France series.

State of Origin 3 was the #1 show of the week with 1.739m watching.

Nine News was also able to boast the biggest news audience of the week with 1.233m watching on Sunday July 11.

A Current Affair averaged 715,000 after 753,000 the week prior.

Also performing well for Nine last week was the launch of Beauty and the Geek with 808,000. The second and third episodes didn’t perform quite so well with the numbers dropping to 619,000 on Monday and then 573,000 on Tuesday.

Nine also saw success on 9Gem with the rugby union featuring Wallabies v France on Tuesday night with a national average audience of 466,000 (Metro: 326,000 Regional: 140,000) helping 9Gem take out the position of #1 multichannel for the evening.

On Saturday the third match of the rugby Wallabies v France series moved to the primary channel with a national average audience of 691,000 (Metro: 496,000 Regional: 195,000).

In commercial shares, Nine has reported the following primetime results: Nine Network won the key demographics 25-54s (39.4%), 16-39s (39.9%) and Grocery Shopper + Child (41.2%). In Total People, 9Network also won with a share of 38.2%.

Across the primary channel shares (primetime), Nine won the key demographics of: 25-54s (28.7%), 16-39s (30.5%) and Grocery Shopper + Child (30.6%). In Total People, Channel 9 won with a share of 27.7%.

In BVOD, Love Island UK is performing strongly again on 9Now with Episode 1 at 237,000, up +48% year on year. Series to date on Love Island UK, 9 out of 16 episodes have a BVOD audience of 150,000 or more.

Seven 19.7% primary share, 28.8% network share

Network share was up slightly week-on-week, but primary share slipped a little.

Seven threw out a TV ratings challenge across the week, winning five nights, but it wasn’t enough to cause a ratings upset.

Seven News laid the groundwork for the primary channel with the #1 bulletins across weekdays and Saturday.

Home and Away continued to average over 600,000 in overnights, but was down a little on last week’s 630,000.

All episodes of Farmer Wants a Wife were over 630,000 with a high of 670,000 for the Sunday episode.

The biggest AFL audience was for the Friday clash where Richmond found some form in front of the metro TV audience of 605,000.

Justin wins MasterChef Australia 2021

10 11.3% primary share, 18.1% network share

Both primary and network shares had their best result in over a month thanks in part to the audience watching Justin win MasterChef Australia 2021. The audience of 931,000/824,000 for the Grand Finale was down on past season climaxes.

Have You Been Paying Attention? had a better week with 671,000.

The Sunday Project 7pm just made it over half a million while the weekday average at 7pm was 471,000.

ABC 10.8% primary share, 15.5% network share

All days of ABC News at 7pm made the top 20 with audiences over 720,000 for weekdays, Saturday and Sunday.

7.30 was next best with an average of 637,000 as Laura Tingle continued to guest host.

The next best was the Tuesday launch of Ms Represented with Annabel Crabb on 574,000.

Grand Designs was the only other program to average over 500,000.

The return of new episodes of Midsomer Murders did 464,000 on Friday, and Four Corners was on 453,000.

SBS 5.7% primary share, 8.5% network share

The final full week of the Tour de France saw Stages 18 and 20 both averaging just under 200,000 viewers.

The biggest audience of the week again however was for Who Do You Think Are? on 272,000.

Michael Portillo is never far from the action on the channel though and a repeat of his Great Asian Railway Journeys did 190,000.
