TV Demand: Stranger Things untouchable at #1

• The series has maintained its position at the top for seven weeks

For the seventh consecutive week, Stranger Things on Netflix has come out on top of all the TV demand charts. The sci-fi series came in 103.83 points above average in Australia and 53.19 points in New Zealand.

The final two episodes of Stranger Things season four were released on July 1 and reportedly caused Netflix to crash. Variety reported, “According to global uptime-monitoring site Downdetector.com, user reports of problems with Netflix spiked around 3 a.m. ET — when “Stranger Things 4” Volume 2 went live. Complaints about errors with Netflix peaked at nearly 13,000 at the top of the hour, before the situation seemed to be resolved within a half hour.”

Season three of The Boys on Amazon Prime has ranked second in Australia and New Zealand for a fourth week, with 35.16 points and 27.12 points, respectively. The season three finale has been confirmed for July 8, with talks of a season four production commencing soon. Karl Urban, who plays Billy Butcher, told Collider, “Yeah, we’re starting I think August the 22nd, we’re going to be starting season four. So I’m getting back, getting my Butcher back on, and I can’t wait. It’s a fun gang to play with, we work hard and play hard, and I can’t wait to see where they take the characters from where we leave them at the end of this season.”

Disney+’s Obi-wan Kenobi, maintains its position in third place across the board. In Australia, the latest instalment in the Star Wars franchise came in 28.32 points above average and 24.61 points in New Zealand.

After an almost two-year wait, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy has shot to fourth place in Australia after its season three release on June 22. The superhero series is based on the comic book series of the same name and stars Elliot Page, Aidan Gallagher and Robert Sheehan.

In Australia’s digital original series, Our Flag Means Death came in at fifth with 22.23 points above the market average. HBO Max confirmed a second season a month ago after a long-running campaign to renew the series by fans.

In Australia’s overall TV shows, animated series, Bluey placed fifth with 24.03 points above the average. The Australian show has recently been praised for its representation of the Auslan community and fertility in recent episodes.

In New Zealand’s digital originals, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds took out the fourth spot, clocking 18.69 points above average. In the overall TV shows, season 8 of Love Island UK placed fourth with 22.12 points above the market average.
