Box Office: The Super Mario Bros. Movie dominates domestically after hitting international milestone

The Super Mario Bros Movie remains number one for the fourth week in a row

This weekend, the Australian box office made $8,857,447, down 41% from last week’s $14.4 million.

Topping the box office charts in its fourth week of release, was once again Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie. The popular animation brought in just over $2.7 million nationally over the weekend and since its April debut, has taken a total of $46,555,729 nationwide.

The film, which follows the origin story of the brothers Mario and Luigi, has also grossed over $1 billion internationally, breaking global box office records for 2023. In only its second week of release, the film skyrocketed past the previous record holder, Disney’s Marvel sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and is fast-becoming the most successful animated movie of all time.

In its sixth week and coming in at number two was John Wick: Chapter 4. The Keanu Reeves-led movie brought in $921,724 nationally with fans still making their way to the big screen for the fourth instalment of the franchise.

Edging out Warner Bros Air and debuting at number three in its first week of release was SJ Films Ponniyin Selvan: Part II. The film which stars Aditha Karikalan, Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan and Mandakini Devi pulled in $908,078 for its debut.

Warner Bros Air came in fourth for its fourth week at the box office, bringing in $754,260. The biographical sports drama film, was directed by Ben Affleck and stars a huge celeb-filled cast including Affleck and Matt Damon alongside Chris MessinaJason Bateman and Viola Davis.

Sitting in fifth place was Warner Bros Evil Dead Rise. In it’s second week of release, the horror film (which will give you nightmares) brought in $726,160.

Falling out of the top five this weekend was Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, Mafia Mamma and The Pope’s Exorcist.

#1 The Super Mario Bros Movie – $2,777,544

With no signs of slowing down, The Super Mario Bros Movie grossed $2,777,544, averaging $4,856 over 572 screens. It was down 58% from last week, but still going strong.

#2 John Wick: Chapter 4 – $921,724

Four years after John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the Chad Stahelski directed film brought in $921,724 nationally over the weekend and averaged $3,083 across 299 screens, down 29% from last week.

#3 Ponniyin Selvan: Part II — $908,078

In it’s first week in theatres, Ponniyin Selvan: Part II brought in $908,078. The second instalment follows Arulmozhi Varman, who is  continuing on his journey to become Rajaraja I, the greatest ruler of the historic Chola empire of south India. It averaged $8,487 over 107 screens.

#4 AIR – $754,260

In its fourth week, Air brought in $754,260 and averaged $2,335 across 323 screens, down 34% from its third week.

#5 Evil Dead Rise — $726,160

The twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons brought in $726,160, averaging $3,171 over 229 screens for its second week of release, down 29%.
