Netflix unveils Playground as alternative to ad-supported kids apps

The app offers a library of games and interactive experiences built around children’s franchises.

Netflix has launched a new children’s gaming app, Netflix Playground, as it looks to strengthen engagement with family audiences and extend its subscription model beyond video.

The app offers a library of games and interactive experiences built around children’s franchises, including Peppa Pig, Sesame Street, Dr Seuss and StoryBots. It is designed for children aged eight and under and is available to Netflix subscribers at no additional cost.

The launch comes as Netflix continues to invest in gaming, although the segment has yet to emerge as a major growth driver.

To date, some of Netflix’s most popular gaming titles have included Rockstar Games’ GTA: San Andreas and games based on its own content, such as Squid Game: Unleashed.

Focus on families and retention

Netflix said the app is designed to provide a “curated space where parents know kids are entertained, engaged and enriched.”

The move is aimed at strengthening its position with family audiences, a segment typically associated with higher retention rates.

“Emphasising kids programs will make Netflix stickier for households with children,” Emarketer senior analyst Ross Benes told Reuters.

The app will also help Netflix “compete in the one area where it has a deficiency compared to Disney+, which is children’s programming,” he added.

Ad-free model central to offering

Netflix has positioned Netflix Playground as a closed, subscription-led environment, with no advertising, in-app purchases or additional fees beyond a standard membership.

The approach differentiates the app from many children’s gaming platforms, which rely on advertising or microtransactions.

All content is accessible with an existing subscription, with no additional payments required to unlock games or features.

Offline play and global rollout

All games within the app are playable offline and include titles such as Playtime With Peppa Pig, Dr Seuss’s Horton! and Sesame Street.

The platform is available via the Apple App Store and Google Play, and has launched in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, the Philippines and New Zealand, with a broader global rollout planned later this month.
