“I am a sucker for punishment”: Brooke Boney’s breakfast TV wakeup call

Brooke Boney

“We have built up really strong relationships with the audience”

Brooke Boney joined the Today show at the start of 2019 as the show’s entertainment reporter. She is now 18 months into the gig and Mediaweek caught up with her to see how life on the breakfast program is going.

“It is so good. I really, really, really feel like we are hitting our stride as a team. We have got a solid team, everyone knows what their role is and we have so much fun when we are on set together,” said Boney.

Boney said the good thing about working with the same team was that they have found a real groove.

“You can sort of tell if someone has something that they really want to get off their chest, or when to give something space and let something breath. I really feel like we are starting to hit that now.

“We have built up really strong relationships with the audience, they know what to expect from us and we know what we want to give them.”

Mediaweek also spoke to Brooke Boney about The Dream Club which can be found here.

Boney said that chemistry is one of the points of difference from the other shows in the market.

“They are quite different shows and I am really proud of that, I think it is a wonderful thing. The team is constantly learning things from each other and I like that.”

When asked if she was a morning person, Boney said that despite working in breakfast radio and now breakfast TV she detests the early morning alarm.

“I am a sucker for punishment. I don’t know how I ended up being someone who does all these breakfast shows when I am naturally a night owl who loves my sleep-ins.

“One thing that I have found is that I am also a real creature of habit, so it does suit me to have the same bedtime every night and the same wake-up time every day, and to get out of bed and have the exact same routine for five days of the week.

“Once you get into that rhythm you can sort of do it. It is not easy and it is not fun setting your alarm for that time but you just do it. Once you get to work you just snap into gear, you have a coffee, everyone is having fun, everyone is getting on with the job and then you are just at work so it doesn’t matter as much. It is just the first 10 minutes that suck, that absolutely suck.”

Boney said that one downside of moving to TV is that along with the early morning wake up she also has to put herself together.

“I can’t even get away with being a dag and not washing my hair or rolling straight out of bed and getting into the studio.  Luckily we have a really great team of people for that stuff because I wouldn’t be able to do it on my own, no way.”
