Guardian Australia appoints David Munk as Editor

David Munk

Long-serving deputy and former London senior managing editor David Munk takes the helm at Guardian Australia.

Guardian News and Media has named David Munk as the new editor of Guardian Australia, effective 15 June 2026.

He replaces Lenore Taylor, who stood down from the position in February.

Munk is a familiar face in the organisation, having joined Guardian Australia in 2014 as international news editor for the Asia Pacific region.

He was appointed deputy editor in 2019 before relocating to London in 2024 to serve as senior managing editor, working alongside editor-in-chief Katharine Viner and the broader editorial leadership team.

He will now return to Sydney to lead the Australian newsroom.

Before joining the Guardian, Munk built his career in the United Kingdom, beginning at the Bristol Evening Post before moving through several Fleet Street titles, including Today and The Daily Mail.

He also served as head of world news at The Daily and Sunday Telegraph.

A decade of growth

Guardian Australia launched in 2013 and has since expanded to four bureaux across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Canberra. The outlet operates as part of the Guardian’s 24-hour global news operation.

Viner praised the incoming editor’s credentials. “David has a deep understanding of both the Guardian and Australia, and brings great verve, creativity, openness and commitment to his work,” she said.

“I’ve no doubt that he will continue to build on Guardian Australia’s many successes.”

Munk said he was ready for the challenge. “I am delighted to have been given the chance to take Guardian Australia forward as the next editor,” he said.

Munk acknowledged the work of his predecessors and signalled his intent to maintain the outlet’s editorial identity – pledging to deliver the “courageous, groundbreaking and crucially independent” journalism Guardian Australia’s audience has come to expect.
