Foxtel is serving up a new comedy series based on the life of legendary American culinary queen Julia Child, simply titled Julia.

The new eight-episode comedy is set to premiere on Sunday, April 3 at 8.30 pm AEST On Demand on Foxtel.

The show, starring actress Sarah Lancashire as the iconic cook, details the story of the cooking teacher, author and television personality, who is best known for bringing French cuisine to America with her debut cookbook entitled Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

The series also explores the era of American history when public television began to be used as a new outlet for feminism and women’s movement, and the changing the nature of celebrity through the release of Child’s show The French Chef.

The trailer follows the iconic cook as she sets out to promote her cookbook. After getting a taste for TV, she puts forward the idea of hosting an educational cooking show on public television – which gets shot down by a TV executive.

Despite getting knocked back at first, she proves to be undeterred with her dream, telling them: “one of the advantages of looking like me is that you learn at a young age how not to take no for an answer.”

She goes on to become the host of a successful television show, despite the criticism, negativity and self-doubt she was faced with, her husband Paul reminds her: “If every critic would silence every artist, how dull would the world be then?”

Leading the stunning cast lead as Julia Child is Lancashire (Happy Valley) along with David Hyde Pierce (Frasier) as her husband Paul.

Also starring in the series is Franz Kranz (Homecoming), Bebe Neuwirth (Frasier), Fiona Glascott (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald) and Brittany Bradford (Broadway’s Bernhardt/Hamlet), with guest stars including Judith Light (Transparent) and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet).

The series is produced by Lionsgate and 3 Arts Entertainment for HBO Max and is exclusive in Australia to the Foxtel Group.

Julia premieres with a special double episode on Sunday, April 3 at 8.30pm AEST On Demand on Foxtel and on Fox Showcase
