Box Office: The Caped Crusader soars to the top as The Batman takes #1

This weekend, the Australian box office made $16.64 million, up 66% on last week’s $10.04 million.

The main driver of this has been The Batman, the latest installment of the powerhouse franchise. This time the title role is being taken on by Robert Pattinson. The cast also includes Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, and Colin Farrell as Penguin. 626,000 DC fans went to the cinema over Wednesday – Sunday. 64% of this audience was from the 18-39 demo.

The only other addition to the top five this week is Monster Family 2, debuting to fifth place.

Dropping out of the top five is Jackass Forever and Marry Me.

#1, The Batman, $11.53 million

The Caped Crusader returns to a staggering opening weekend. Averaging $15,628 over 738 screens, it’s hasn’t quite managed to top Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opened to $26.12 million in December.

#2, Uncharted, $1.95 million

Based on the popular video game series that was inspired by Indiana Jones and other classic adventure films, Uncharted averaged $4,811 over 406 screens this week. In its third week, it has now grossed $13.53 million.

#3, Belfast, $421,735

Averaging $2,067 over 204 screens this week and earning a total of $3.69 million, Belfast follows the life of a working-class Ulster Protestant family from the perspective of their 9-year-old son Buddy during The Troubles in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

#4, Death on the Nile, $404,323

Falling from second to fourth this week, Death on the Nile is directed by and stars Sir Kenneth Branagh. Based on the 1937 Agatha Christie novel of the same title, this week it averaged $1,449 over 279 screens. It has made a total of $5.37 million.

#5, Monster Family 2, $401,221

Set a year after the events of the first film, the voice cast includes Emily Watson, Jason Isaacs, Nick Frost, Jessica Brown Findlay, Catherine Tate, Ethan Rouse, and Emily Carey. On debut, it averaged $1,561 over 257 screens.
