Box Office: Magic Mike’s Last Dance overtakes Avatar ahead of Valentine’s Day

This weekend the Australian box office made $7.58 million, down -22% from last week’s $9.76 million.

Topping the box office charts in its debut week is Magic Mike’s Last Dance, grossing over $1.6 million. The third instalment in the Magic Mike franchise sees Channing Tatum reprise his role as Mike Lan as he takes to the stage again after a lengthy hiatus, following a business deal that went bust, leaving him broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida.

In its ninth week, Avatar: The Way of Water has dropped from first to second, grossing over $1.17 million this past weekend. Despite its drop,  Avatar: The Way of Water has grossed over $90 million to date, surpassing Avengers: Endgame to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in Australia and inching closer to overtaking Top Gun: Maverick, which currently stands at $93 million.

Coming in at third in its first week is another James Cameron film – a 2023 3D re-release of Titanic. Starring a young Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the film was released to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh and Olivia Colman, has moved up to fourth in its sixth week on screens. The animated film made $488k across 259 screens this past weekend.

Falling from second to fifth was Universal’s Knock at the Cabin, grossing $438k. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the film is based on the 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World.

Falling out of the top five this weekend was André Rieu in Dublin and Indian-Hindi action thriller, Pathaan, directed by Siddharth Anand.

#1 Magic Mike’s Last Dance – $1.68 million

In its opening week, the film averaged $3,628 across 465 screens. Starring Tatum, Salma Hayek Pinault and Ayub Khan Din, the third film in the franchise sees Mike head to London with a wealthy socialite who lures him with an offer he can’t refuse.

#2 Avatar: The Way of Water – $1.72 million

In its nine weeks of release, the film has grossed $90.38 million to date and averaged $2,398 across 472 screens this past weekend. 

Directed by James Cameron, the film sees cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Stephen Lang reprising their roles from the original film, with Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis joining as new members. The film has surpassed Avengers: Endgame to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in Australia.

#3 Titanic – $561,236

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, a remastered version of James Cameron’s 1997 Titanic has hit cinemas in 3D. In its first week, the film averaged $2,698 across 208 screens. Titanic has won a record 11 Academy Awards and is currently the third highest-grossing film worldwide. 

#4 Puss in Boots: The Last Wish – $488,035

The star-studded Pixar film averaged $1,994 across 259 screens this past weekend and has grossed $20.27 million to date. Based on the character from Shrek 2 (2004) and inspired by the fairy tale by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, the film is the sixth instalment in the Shrek franchise.

#5 Knock at the Cabin – $438,116

While vacationing at a remote cabin, a young girl and her parents are taken hostage by four armed strangers who demand that the family make an unthinkable choice to avert the apocalypse. The film stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, and Nikki Amuka-Bird. In its second week, the film averaged $1,623 across 270 screens and has grossed $1.4 million to date.
