Guardians of the Galaxy knocks Super Mario Bros off number one spot

This weekend, the Australian box office made $13,855,430, up 55% from last week’s $8,857,447 million.

Topping the box office charts in its first week of release was Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Audiences raced to see the long-awaited blockbuster with the film recording the second biggest opening of 2023 behind The Super Mario Bros which recorded $12 million during its debut weekend.

The emotional third instalment follows Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who rallies his team to defend the universe while still reeling from the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldana). It brought in $9,479,271 nationally and $282 million internationally. And with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear that Pratt and his team are set to command movie theatres for weeks to come!

In its fifth week of release and coming in at number two, was Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie. While it was bumped from the number one spot, the film still brought in $1,366,056 nationally, meaning fans are still infatuated by the origin story of Mario and Luigi.

In its seventh week and coming in at number three was John Wick: Chapter 4. The Keanu Reeves-led movie brought in $435,297 nationally with fans still making their way to the big screen for the fourth instalment of the franchise.

Continuing its reign of terror was Warner Bros Evil Dead Rise which came in fourth for its third week. The horror film brought in $387,321.

Coming in at number five was Warner Bros Air. The biographical sports drama starring and directed by Ben Affleck, brought in $364,522 for its fifth week in cinemas. 

Falling out of the top five this weekend was Jodi (debut), Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves and Ponniyin Selvan: Part II.

#1 Guardians of the Galaxy 3 – $9,479,271

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 grossed $9,479,271, averaging $10,858 over 873 screens. Alongside Pratt, the film stars Chukwudi Iwuji, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Pom Klementieff.

#2 The Super Mario Bros Movie – $1,366,056

With no signs of slowing down, The Super Mario Bros Movie grossed $1,366,056, averaging $3,324 over 411 screens, down 51% from last week.

#3 John Wick: Chapter 4 – $435,297

The Chad Stahelski directed film brought in $435,297 nationally over the weekend and averaged $1,829 across 238 screens, down 53% from last week.

#4 Evil Dead Rise — $387,321

The twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons brought in $387,321, averaging $1,785 over 217 screens for its third week of release, down 47%.

#5 AIR – $364,522

In its fifth week, Air brought in $364,522 and averaged $1,642 across 222 screens, down 52% from its fourth week.
