This weekend, the Australian box office made $11.99 million

This weekend, the Australian box office made $11.99 million, down 3% from last week’s $12.39 million.

The highly anticipated Don’t Worry Darling claimed the top spot at the Australian box office this past weekend. Directed by Olivia Wilde, the film made headlines in the lead-up to the premiere due to the alleged behind-the-scenes drama between Wilde and actress Florence Pugh. The film stars Pugh as Alice Chambers, a devoted young housewife, alongside Harry Styles as Jack Chambers, Alice’s workaholic husband. Although the film received mixed reviews since its premiere, it grossed over $2 million this past weekend.

Maintaining its spot at #2 is Warner Bros’ DC League of Super-Pets. Starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, the film tells the story of Superman’s pet dog Krypto and shelter dog Ace, who work with other animals to save the captured superheroes from Lex Luthor and Lulu. To date, the film has brought in over $16 million.

Moving up the ranks this past weekend was the Paramount+ horror film Smile. Written and directed by Parker Finn, the film stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist who, after witnessing the bizarre suicide of a patient, goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences, leading her to believe what she is experiencing is supernatural. This past weekend, the film grossed $1.6 million, an increase of 44%.

Sliding down to fourth in its fourth week was Ticket to Paradise starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Despite the plot being set in Bali, the Ol Parker-directed film was filmed in Queensland. This past weekend, the film grossed over $1.27 million, a -34% fall from the week before.

Making its way into the top five in its first week on screens was Walt Disney’s film Amsterdam. The story is based on the Business Plot, a 1933 political conspiracy in the United States, and follows three friends—a doctor, a nurse, and a lawyer—who are caught in the mysterious murder of a US senator.

Falling out of the box office top five this past week was Indian film Ponniyin Selvan: I and Walt Disney’s See How They Run.
