This weekend the Australian box office made $9.31 million, up 11% from last week’s $8.37 million.

Topping the box office charts in its opening week was Creed III, grossing over $3.3 million across 429 screens. As the third instalment in the Creed franchise, the latest film centres on Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) as he thrives in his career and family life after dominating the boxing world.

Walt Disney’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, grossed over $1.4 million across 511 screens in its third week. The film is the latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and stars Paul Rudd, alongside Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, and Kathryn Newton.

In its second week, Cocaine Bear grossed $964k. The comedy horror film directed and produced by Elizabeth Banks and written by Jimmy Warden is loosely inspired by the true story of the “Cocaine Bear,” an American black bear that ingested millions of dollars of lost cocaine in 1985.

Placing fourth in its first week is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village with just over $738k. The opening will show episodes 10 and 11 of the latest season. It will feature the fierce battle between Tanjiro, Sound Hashira, Tengen Uzui, and their comrades against Upper Six, Daki and Gyutaro.

In its twelfth week, Avatar: The Way of Water has fallen to fifth, grossing $403k. The film has brought in over $92 million to date, surpassing Avengers: Endgame to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in Australia and inching closer to overtaking Top Gun: Maverick, which currently stands at $93 million.

Falling out of the top five this weekend was Magic Mike’s Last Dance grossing over $296k and Fisherman’s Friends 2.

#1 Creed III, – $3.34 million

When a childhood friend of Creed and former boxing prodigy, Damian (Jonathan Majors), resurfaces after serving a long sentence in prison, he is eager to prove that he deserves his shot in the ring. The face-off between former friends is more than just a fight. Creed III is the third instalment in the franchise and is Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut. The film averaged $7,804 across 429 screens.

#2 Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania – $1.43 million

In the film, which officially kicks off phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. In its third week, the film averaged $2,814 across 511 screens. The film has grossed $13.6 million to date.

#3 Cocaine Bear – $964k

In its second week, the film averaged $3,260 across 296 screens. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Margo Martindale, and Ray Liotta and has grossed $2.8 million to date.

#4 Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village – $544,397

In its debut week, the film averaged $5,237 across 141 screens. The screening is a compilation movie comprised of the last two episodes of season two plus the first episode of the upcoming third season. Fans are turning out to theatres to watch 30 minutes of new footage before Demon Slayer returns in just over a month.

#5 Avatar: The Way of Water – $403,518

In its 12 weeks of release, the film has grossed $92.77 million to date and averaged $1,595 across 253 screens this past weekend.  Directed by James Cameron, the film sees cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Stephen Lang reprising their roles from the original film, with Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis joining as new members.
