This weekend the Australian box office made $8.26 million, down -26% from last week’s $11.22 million.

Topping the box office charts in its second week was Walt Disney’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, grossing over $2.9 million across 583 screens. The film is the latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and stars Paul Rudd, alongside Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, and Kathryn Newton.

In its opening week, Cocaine Bear grossed over $1.4 million. The comedy horror film directed and produced by Elizabeth Banks and written by Jimmy Warden is loosely inspired by the true story of the “Cocaine Bear”, an American black bear that ingested millions of dollars of lost cocaine in 1985.

In its eleventh week, Avatar: The Way of Water has maintained its spot at third, grossing $591k. The film has grossed over $92 million to date, surpassing Avengers: Endgame to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in Australia and inching closer to overtaking Top Gun: Maverick, which currently stands at $93 million.

Falling to fourth in its third week was Magic Mike’s Last Dance, grossing over $544. The third instalment in the Magic Mike franchise sees Channing Tatum reprise his role as Mike Lan as he takes to the stage again after a lengthy hiatus, following a business deal that went bust, leaving him broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida.

Fisherman’s Friends 2 came in at fifth, bringing in over $327k. The sequel to the 2019 film follows the celebrated shanty singers through the highs and lows as lifelong friendships are put to the test.

Falling out of the top five this weekend was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh and Olivia Colman and Universal’s TÁR 

#1 Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania – $2.96 million

In the film, which officially kicks off phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. In its second week, the film averaged $5,084 across 583 screens. The film has grossed $11.7 million to date.

#2 Cocaine Bear – $1.48 million

In its opening week, the film averaged $4,245 across 350 screens. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Margo Martindale, and Ray Liotta.

#3 Avatar: The Way of Water – $591,923

In its 11 weeks of release, the film has grossed $92.22 million to date and averaged $1,993 across 297 screens this past weekend. 

Directed by James Cameron, the film sees cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Stephen Lang reprising their roles from the original film, with Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis joining as new members. The film has surpassed Avengers: Endgame to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in Australia.

#4 Magic Mike’s Last Dance – $544,397

In its third week, the film averaged $1,827 across 298 screens. Starring Tatum, Salma Hayek Pinault and Ayub Khan Din, the third film in the franchise sees Mike head to London with a wealthy socialite who lures him with an offer he can’t refuse. The film has grossed $5.04 million to date.

#5 Fisherman’s Friends 2 – $327,143

In its debut week, the film averaged $1,185 across 276 screens.
