This weekend the Australian box office made $11.15 million, up 46% from last week’s $7.64 million.

Topping the box office charts in its debut week was Walt Disney’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, grossing over $6.4 million across 828 screens. The film is the latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and stars, Paul Rudd, alongside Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, and Kathryn Newton.

Falling to second in its second week was Magic Mike’s Last Dance, grossing over $1 million. The third instalment in the Magic Mike franchise sees Channing Tatum reprise his role as Mike Lan as he takes to the stage again after a lengthy hiatus, following a business deal that went bust, leaving him broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida.

In its tenth week, Avatar: The Way of Water has dropped from second to third, grossing under $1 million for the first time. Despite its drop,  Avatar: The Way of Water has grossed over $91 million to date, surpassing Avengers: Endgame to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in Australia and inching closer to overtaking Top Gun: Maverick, which currently stands at $93 million.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh and Olivia Colman, has remained steady at fourth in its seventh week on screens. The animated film made $362k across 236 screens this past weekend.

Universal’s TÁR has skyrocketed from 13th to fifth in its fourth week. The psychological drama is written and directed by Todd Field and stars Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár, a renowned conductor who is accused of sexual abuse.

Falling out of the top five this weekend was the 2023 3D re-release of Titanic, and Universal’s Knock at the Cabin.

#1 Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania – $6.46 million

In the film, which officially kicks off phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. In its opening week, the film averaged $7,813 across 828 screens. 

#2 Magic Mike’s Last Dance – $1.02 million

In its second week, the film averaged $2,939 across 350 screens. Starring Tatum, Salma Hayek Pinault and Ayub Khan Din, the third film in the franchise sees Mike head to London with a wealthy socialite who lures him with an offer he can’t refuse. The film has grossed $4.3 million to date.

#3 Avatar: The Way of Water – $637,985

In its ten weeks of release, the film has grossed $91.45 million to date and averaged $1,839 across 347 screens this past weekend. 

Directed by James Cameron, the film sees cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Stephen Lang reprising their roles from the original film, with Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis joining as new members. The film has surpassed Avengers: Endgame to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in Australia.

#4 Puss in Boots: The Last Wish – $362,496

The star-studded Pixar film averaged $1,536 across 236 screens this past weekend and has grossed $20.73 million to date. Based on the character from Shrek 2 (2004) and inspired by the fairy tale by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, the film is the sixth instalment in the Shrek franchise.

#5 TÁR – $231,795

In its fourth week, the film averaged $2,107 across 110 screens and has grossed $1.68 million to date. The film stars Blanchett as the main character, alongside Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner, and Mark Strong.
