ARIA Chart Report: Gang of Youths return with Angel its latest chart-topper

Gang of Youths

Five new albums in the top 10 including rock veterans Slash and Tears For Fears

Singles

A new ARIA Chart #1 this week, sort of. Glass Animals has dislodged Elton John and Dua Lipa from top spot this week. It’s not the first time Glass Animals has led the chart with Heat Waves, but it’s been some 47 weeks since it last landed there. Of the tune’s 65 weeks on the chart, it has spent 57 weeks in the top 10, something which ARIA points out is a chart record for the English indie rockers from Oxford.

There were no new entries in the top 10 this week, just a shuffling of some of the chart positions.

There was in fact just one new entry into the top 50 – Labrinth in at #49 with All For Us. It is the first top 50 entry for the British singer-songwriter-rapper-producer Timothy Lee McKenzie since 2015 with Jealous. All For Us hails from 2019 and is a song Zendaya performed in the first season of Foxtel TV series Euphoria.

Big movers this week included Nail Tech from Jack Harlow which lifted 14 places to #22 in its second week.

Em Beihold moved up 12 spots to #36 with Numb Little Bug, also the second week on the chart.

Albums

Anyone who went to the 2017 ARIA Awards will remember the evening as Gang of Youths night as the Sydney band dominated the ceremony with four wins including Album of the Year for Go Farther in Lightness. Their first album since then, Angel in Realtime, sees history repeat itself with another #1 debut. Just how well it performs for the band in the next ARIA Awards remains to be seen. The band now spend much time out of Australia and it’s paid off as the new album has also cracked the top 10 in the UK.

Commenting on their latest success, the band said: “We just want to thank everybody for sticking with us and buying and streaming our record. We are proud to be an Australian band and we just want to say again how much we appreciate the support we get from you all.”

Gang of Youths were just one of five artists with new releases cracking the top 10 on debut. There was just one other new release in the top 50 outside the top 10.
