Anthropic has appointed Theo Hourmouzis as its first general manager for Australia and New Zealand, as the company formally launches its Sydney office.
Hourmouzis joins from Snowflake, where he most recently served as senior vice president for ANZ and ASEAN, bringing nearly three decades of experience across enterprise technology.
The Sydney launch marks a key step in Anthropic’s global growth strategy, following recent expansions into Tokyo and Bengaluru, with Seoul next on the roadmap.
Australia has emerged as a strong market for the company, with its AI assistant Claude ranking among the most widely used globally and local adoption placing the country among the top five per capita users.
Hourmouzis comments
Hourmouzis said organisations in the region are approaching AI adoption with caution and intent.
“Organisations across Australia and New Zealand are thinking carefully about how to adopt AI, and they want partners who take safety and rigour as seriously as they take the opportunity,” he said. “The organisations that do best with AI will be the ones that pair ambition with discipline.”
Hourmouzis expressed that what drew him to the role is the opportunity to work with the ANZ organisation, transitioning from “AI ambition to impact”
“I’ve spent the last 25 years helping organisations across this region get the most from transformative technology, and I’ve never seen a moment quite like this one,” Hourmouzis said in a LinkedIn post.
“There’s a genuine opportunity on our doorstep, and I’m looking forward to being part of it.
Government and enterprise ties
Anthropic already counts major Australian organisations, including Commonwealth Bank and Quantium, among its customers, alongside research partnerships with institutions such as the Australian National University and the Garvan Institute.
The move comes as Anthropic competes with rivals, including OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft, in the race to secure enterprise AI adoption.
The company has also recently partnered with Australian tech firms, including Canva and Xero, embedding its Claude AI into their platforms.
