Independent film distributor Umbrella has launched ‘Umbrella Gaming’, a new division focused on distributing independently developed video games.
The move expands the company’s reach beyond cinema and into the interactive entertainment space, marking a shift in strategy following its recent rebrand.
This development positions Umbrella as a cross-media distributor, with plans to support independent developers through traditional film-style distribution services: from PR and marketing to platform management and campaign rollouts.
First title
The first title acquired under Umbrella Gaming is Pro Jank Footy, a satirical take on Australian Rules Football developed by POWERBOMB GAMES.
The game has been created by David Ashby (best known for Danger 5) and Tyler Roach (formerly of Mighty Kingdom), with Cam Rogers producing and Broden Kelly from Aunty Donna lending his voice as the game’s commentator.
With its stylised visuals, local footy humour and intentionally absurd gameplay, Pro Jank Footy will be previewed at major events including PAX Australia and SXSW Sydney in 2025. A global release is expected in 2026 across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
“When we set out to make Pro Jank Footy, we decided on two things. One, make a fun and chaotic retro throwback of Australian Rules Football. And two, keep the production an Australian story,” Ashby said.
“Umbrella recognise the plethora of talent we have in this country, as we are one of many developers making weird and wonderful games that truly have appeal at home and abroad. We’re humbled to be their first.”
Supporting local games
Umbrella Gaming’s approach will mirror the film industry’s distributor-producer relationship. Rather than developers managing releases internally, as is often the case in the indie game space, Umbrella will offer professional support to help games find broader audiences.
That includes full distribution services, campaign planning, and direct liaison with digital storefronts. The model is designed to ease the pressure on small studios while opening up more exposure opportunities both locally and internationally.
“We’re stoked to launch Umbrella Gaming as a new home for bold, original games from Australia and New Zealand’s most creative minds,” said Umbrella General Manager Ari Harrison.
“Just as Umbrella has championed independent film, we’re now bringing that same passion and experience to the world of indie games, backing distinctive voices, supporting end-to-end releases, and helping local stories reach global audiences.”

Building the bridge between games and film
The company’s push into gaming follows several recent acquisitions that blur the line between interactive and cinematic experiences. Umbrella has secured ANZ rights for Exit 8, a Japanese thriller based on the viral minimalist horror game by KOTAKE CREATE. The film adaptation, which grew out of a strong online following across TikTok, Reddit and YouTube, will be distributed locally.
Umbrella has also picked up Return to Silent Hill, the new feature adaptation of KONAMI’s iconic horror game.
Directed by Christophe Gans and scored by longtime franchise composer Akira Yamaoka, the film returns to the original series’ psychological themes and moody aesthetics.
Both Pro Jank Footy and Exit 8 will be included in the SXSW Sydney 2025 program.
