The West Australian launches new brand campaign ahead of 190th anniversary celebrations

The West Australian

“It’s exciting to highlight the journey we’ve been on, and be part of the direction we’re heading”

The West Australian marked its 190th anniversary by launching a new brand campaign that speaks to the history of all West Australians.

This milestone will be celebrated with a number of exciting initiatives – from special publications, editorial content and competitions to trade and reader events and exhibitions. These initiatives are scheduled to take place between June and December and are inspired by the idea that there is always a story.

As part of this concept, the publication has created a series of short videos in which, every day West Australians share their recollections of a moment in time, a place, a person, or even a feeling. In the retelling of their stories, we are reminded that this is part of who we are.

They are ‘the stories that make us.’ An integrated campaign across TV, press, online and radio will reinforce this message.

The videos cover a wide range of captivating stories, from the scandalous Miss Universe stage collapse of 1979 to John Worsfold’s firsthand account of the West Coast Eagles’ inaugural premiership in 1992.

They also highlight some classic local tales all Sandgropers will appreciate, such as the great Perth hailstorm of 2010, Justin Langer’s tips on crabbing in Mandurah, and even the origin of a beloved West Aussie treat, the conti roll.

The West Australian celebrates 190

A dedicated page has been created on thewest.com.au/190Years showcasing the videos and this will also be home to all 190th-anniversary content.

The West Australian is also publishing a special four-part magazine series – 190 years of The West Australian. Every Saturday from 10 June until 1 July, a 48-page glossy magazine will be released, each celebrating a different aspect of our history.

Presenting partner Roy Hill and supporting partners Rio Tinto and BHP will share the unforgettable stories of the people, the pictures that told a thousand words, the front pages that brought breaking news from around the world, and the sporting moments you’ll always remember.

Each magazine will be published as four separate online multi-page features which will be released every Monday from 12 June and online.
