Lara Thom exits GYG after nine years as CMO

Guzman y Gomez global chief marketing officer Lara Thom has resigned after nine years with the business, stepping away from the fast-growing restaurant chain on 24 April.

Thom has spent close to a decade helping shape the Sydney-founded brand’s marketing strategy as it expanded into an international operation, now spanning more than 200 restaurants across four countries.

Her departure marks a leadership transition at a pivotal moment for the business, which continues to position itself for further global growth.

Transition plan in place as West steps up

Thom will be succeeded by Claire West, who joined GYG as director of marketing in February, following senior roles at Woolworths Group and Westpac.

West will step into a broader leadership remit, overseeing the company’s global marketing function and working alongside the director of communications, Alison Peake, and regional teams.

GYG founder and co-CEO Steven Marks said Thom had played a defining role in the brand’s evolution.

“Lara brought real energy and conviction to the GYG brand. She cared deeply about doing it right, not just what looked good, but what connected with people. We’re grateful for everything she gave to GYG, and whatever comes next for her, I have no doubt it’ll be great.

“Claire West will step up to lead our broader marketing function, working closely with Director of Communications, Alison Peake and our Australian and international teams to provide the global marketing leadership GYG needs. I have full confidence in her and the team.”

‘Right time’ to hand over to next generation

Thom said the decision to step down comes as the business enters its next phase of growth.

“The business is in an exceptional position to become the best and biggest restaurant company in the world, and it feels like the right time for me to hand GYG Marketing over to a new generation of leaders who will take GYG to its next phase of growth in Australia and globally.”

Her exit comes as GYG continues to scale both locally and internationally, with marketing leadership set to play a central role in sustaining brand momentum across markets.
