Kent ‘Smallzy’ Small to depart Nova after two decades on air

Kent 'Smallzy' Small

The final Smallzy’s Surgery will be airing this Friday.

After more than 20 years in radio and 13 years at the helm of a number one national evening program, Kent ‘Smallzy’ Small has announced he will wrap up Smallzy’s Surgery this week.

Small will present his final Smallzy’s Surgery on Nova this Friday, ending a 23-year run with the network. The Sydney-based broadcaster confirmed his decision on Monday, saying the “time had come” to close this chapter of his career.

“What a ride,” Small wrote on Instagram. “When I first started the show I never would have imagined getting to do the things I have done, from the celebrity interviews, to Nova’s Red Room and travelling the globe covering the biggest events. They’ve all made the show something very, very special.

“Thank you to everyone who’s been part of the show. I leave with fond memories, lifelong friendships, but most importantly I’m grateful to every single person who has ever chosen to spend their night with me.”

Two decades on air

Small began his career in community radio in western Sydney at the age of 16, joining Nova in 2003. Over the years, he has become one of the most well-connected entertainment broadcasters in Australia, delivering 92 number one survey results for Smallzy’s Surgery.

Nova Entertainment described the show as a pioneer in its format, offering “a unique take on pop culture, music, news and celebrity gossip” underpinned by “the relationships Smallzy has built, and the unparalleled access he enjoys to the world’s biggest stars.”

Tributes from colleagues and artists

Messages of support came from across the industry and beyond. Nova’s Tim Blackwell commented: “You’re a master my man! Congrats on a superb, untouched run and for bringing your world class talent to our lil corner of the dial for so many years. You will be missed mate.”

Blackwell’s co-host Ricki-Lee Coulter added: “You my friend, are an absolute gun and in a league of your own. This may be the end of an era but I’m sure it’s the beginning of something equally amazing. Thank you for being such an incredible supporter of Australian music artists for all these years – and for making us all smile for the last 13 years.”

Rival Hit Network night host Nic Kelly wrote: “Unmatched innings – thank you for the blueprint – and smash what is to come.”

International acts also shared their congratulations. Ed Sheeran said: “20 years is an incredible achievement to be in the radio game for, and to be at such the high level you’re at. We’ve had such an amazing time together in the last 13 years of my career.”

Billie Eilish added: “Hey Smallzy, congrats on 20 years on the air. Thank you for all your support over the years.”

Katy Perry said: “Smallzy, 20 years? No way. It can’t be. I think I’ve been with you for 15 of those years and I barely look 21. I’m so proud of you. We love listening to you. You bring so much joy.”

Nova’s next move

The network has yet to confirm who will take over the national evening slot. Industry speculation has linked former KIIS FM presenter Mitch Churi to Nova, though no announcement has been made.

Small will host his final Smallzy’s Surgery this Friday.
