Binge’s House of the Dragon has been renewed for a second season after delivering record ratings on its premiere episode.

The first season of the highly anticipated Game of Thrones spin-off premiered on Foxtel and Binge on August 22, with episodes released weekly.

The confirmation of a season two renewal comes within the first week of the season one premiere.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel Fire & Blood, the series, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen.

The ensemble cast includes Paddy Considine (The Third Day), Matt Smith (The Crown), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Steve Toussaint (Doctor Who), Eve Best (Nurse Jackie), Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina), Fabien Frankel (The Serpent) and Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill).

The series also features Australian stars Milly Alcock (Upright) as Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ryan Corr (Packed to the Rafters) as Ser Harwin’ Breakbones’ Strong.

To bookmark the premiere of the series, a three-month campaign was launched by Binge in partnership with Thinkerbell, Mindshare, We Are Social, Wonder and Habitat earlier this month.

Dragons were unleashed across paid, owned, earned and social channels, with the campaign enjoying a placement on the southern hemisphere’s largest billboard. The campaign also reached national television, cinema, print, outdoor and radio advertising.

Executive director of Binge, Alison Hurbert-Burns said: “It’s been three long years since the Game of Thrones finale went to air, and fans, like me, have been eagerly awaiting the prequel set 200 years prior. Now the wait is over with House of the Dragon now streaming on Binge with new episodes weekly.”

In a stunt to garner excitement over the campaign, giant dragon eggs were placed – or “washed up” on Anglesea Beach along the Great Ocean Road. The dragon egg then popped up in Melbourne’s Federation Square, resulting in a following “discovery” campaign across Instagram and TikTok.

House of the Dragon available now on Foxtel and Binge.
