Jokes outrun journalism in the podcast race according to July ranker

The July Australian Podcast Ranker reveals top shows, genre trends, and new data highlighting the buying power of Health & Fitness podcast audiences.

Hamish & Andy have taken the top spot on the Australian Podcast Ranker for July, displacing ABC News Top Stories.

The LiSTNR-owned show recorded 851,031 monthly listeners, 13,162 more than the ABC’s offering, which drew 837,869.

Grant Tothill, Executive Head LiSTNR Operations and Audience, said: “It’s great to see Hamish & Andy back at number one in the Triton Top 300 Podcast Ranker, alongside strong results for Dan Does Footy, Happy Hour with Lucy & Nikki, The Imperfects, and It’s A Lot with Abbie Chatfield, all of which secured places inside the Top 20.”

Tothill continued: “These results reflect the power of trusted voices and compelling storytelling. The Howie Games also delivered its greatest audience in more than 18 months, reinforcing audience appetite for high-quality, long-form content.

“With our world-class AdTech and ability to target our ‘known audience’, the LiSTNR sales team is driving podcast and radio instream monetisation through both programmatic and direct revenue channels.

“After recently announcing the launch of LiSTNR Precision+, a major step forward in real-time measurement, LiSTNR is further strengthening its global best-in-class AdTech capabilities. Combined with the LiSTNR Audience Network which includes podcasts, radio in-stream, and music playlists reaching up to 10 million Australian each month, LiSTNR will continue to deliver both scale and effectiveness for advertisers.”

Rounding out the top five were Mamamia Out Loud (Mamamia) with 537,250 listeners, ABC News Daily with 455,544, and Sky News Australia Update (News Corp Australia) with 446,257.

Notably absent from the top five were any podcasts from the Australian Radio Network’s (ARN) iHeart network. Its highest-ranked title, The Kyle and Jackie O Show, placed seventh.

Upon the release of the figures, the network was quick to spruik it’s latest partnership with Clubby Sports’ podcasts, with Corey Layton, ARN’s Head of Digital Audio, saying: “Clubby Sports’ podcasts are performing strongly in the ranker, and we’re seeing significant commercial interest in their unique line-up, creating exciting opportunities for brands to connect with highly engaged audiences.”

Compiled by Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) and Triton Digital, the monthly ranker offers the only official, independently verified podcast measurement in Australia, governed by a cross-industry Steering Committee. The July data also includes new audience insights, underscoring the influence of key genre demographics.

Top podcasts and genres in July

The ABC News Top Stories podcast from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation came in second with 837,869 listeners, followed by Mamamia Out Loud (537,250), Mushroom Case Daily (455,544), and Sky News Australia Update (446,257).

By genre, News retained its position as Australia’s most listened-to category, drawing nearly 5 million monthly listeners. Rounding out the top five were Society & Culture (4.16 million), Sports (3.76 million), True Crime (3.33 million), and Comedy (2.84 million).

Health & Fitness listeners: a profitable paradox

New demographic data from Triton’s Demos+ reveals that Health & Fitness podcast listeners present a compelling case for brands seeking crossover appeal.

Despite 48 per cent of this group actively pursuing fitness, 62 per cent report visiting quick service restaurants weekly. They also dominate grocery decisions, with 81 per cent acting as the household’s primary shopper and 88 per cent shopping weekly.

With 80 per cent aged 18–49 and 72 per cent falling in the 25–54 demographic, this cohort represents consumers in their prime earning and spending years. CRA CEO Lizzie Young said the data offers valuable direction for advertisers.

“The Australian Podcast Ranker goes beyond audience numbers to reveal the highly engaged, trusted niche communities shaping consumer decisions,” Young said. “This data gives brands the clarity to invest smarter, connect deeper, and cultivate brand loyalty with the demographics that matter most to their brands.”
