Good One Creative pitches May8 Day as a celebration of mateship

Good One Creative launches May8 Day: a grassroots push championing mateship and social unity.

Advertising agencies love inventing calendar events, but a new community-led campaign pitches an annual celebration of mateship that might actually stick.

Dubbed May8 Day, the initiative builds national momentum as a fresh cultural event championing social cohesion.

Instead of lobbying for another official public holiday or wading into the ongoing 26 January debate, organisers position May8 Day strictly as a social occasion.

They want people across Australia to gather on 8 May and celebrate everything they love about their friends, their culture, and the country.

The pitch for social connection

Melbourne-based advertising agency Good One Creative drives this grassroots push. Co-founder Charlie Howcroft recently hit the road on a moped scooter. He interviewed Australians from various walks of life to uncover the true meaning of mateship.

“There is so much happening in the world causing social friction and division right now,” Howcroft said. “May8 Day is a platform to drive social connection, to tell our mates we love them, spotlight the wonderful ways people show mateship daily, as well as celebrate the Australian way of life we are lucky to have.”

Rolling out the campaign

In true agency fashion, Good One Creative transformed Howcroft’s collected stories into a rolling content series. The agency runs the campaign across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube under the handle @mateshipday. The videos capture candid, funny responses to a deceptively simple question about the meaning of mateship.

Several notable faces share their honest perspectives throughout the series. The lineup includes bisexual former footballer Mitch Brown, indigenous rights advocate and model Nyima Tucker, radio personality Will McMahon (Will & Woody), and city of Maribyrnong mayor Mohamed Semra.

Howcroft noted the overwhelmingly positive feedback, attributing the success to a universally appealing concept. The day avoids creating a new logistical headache for businesses managing public holidays and steers clear of specific historic events.

Launching at the local bowls club

To officially kick things off, Good One Creative will host the inaugural May8 Day celebration at the City of Melbourne Bowls Club in Flagstaff Gardens on Friday 8 May. The event runs from six in the evening until 10 pm. Attendance costs nothing, but punters must register to secure a spot.

The launch party promises a highly localised menu, featuring a sausage sizzle with kanga bangas and damper.

Organisers encourage attendees to bring a sauce or condiment representing their own mateship group or background. It’s a way to offer a tasty nod to cultural diversity.

The evening also features lawn bowls, live music, and dedicated sessions for writing poems and letters to mates.
