Fran Kelly is set to host ABC’s brand new chat show, Frankly. The former RN Breakfast host has swapped her early morning radio mic for a prime-time TV studio to host her own talk show in front of a live audience with a house rock band.

Production for Frankly has begun and will begin screening on Friday nights later this year on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Kelly will interview some of the biggest names and brains from both Australia and around the globe.

Kelly said of her new show: “I’m so excited about this new show. Leaving RN Breakfast was bittersweet… I’m loving the sleep-ins but missing all those incredible conversations with fabulous guests from around Australia and the world.

“People have been asking ever since what’s next for me. Well, this is it and I can’t wait. More great conversations, a live audience and my own band…what’s not to be excited about? It’s such a privilege and going to be so much fun,” she added.

Head of ABC entertainment Nick Hayden said: “Fran brings such a warmth and depth of intelligence we couldn’t be more excited to invite the audience in to hear her chat with the most interesting and electrifying people on the planet.”

In December 2021, Kelly announced she would be leaving RN Breakfast after 17 years behind the mic with the national broadcaster.

At the time, she said on air that said choosing to leave the role she’s had since 2005 was the hardest decision she has ever made.

“I’ve been in this role for 17 years and I have loved every second of it. Each morning is an adrenalin-fuelled, non-stop live ride interviewing some of the greatest and most interesting minds in Australia and the world. I thrive on the thrill of both setting the day’s news agenda and engaging in the public discussions we have as a society.

“Presenting RN Breakfast is the best journalism job in the country and it is very hard to walk away from it. But Breakfast is a hard taskmaster – 17 years of early mornings is tough on the body and soul and I am choosing to leave now because I never want to give this job any less than 100 per cent.”

Frankly is an ABC Entertainment production.
