dmg media has promoted Felicity Hetherington as the editor of Daily Mail Australia, succeeding Barclay Crawford, who will step into the role of executive editor of DailyMail.com, based in New York.

Hetherington is currently the deputy editor of Daily Mail Australia and will oversee Australian editorial operations. Her appointment is effective from February 2024.

She joined Daily Mail Australia in 2016 and became deputy editor in 2017. She was previously a news editor at both heraldsun.com.au and news.com.au.

Felicity said of her new role: “I look forward to both the opportunity of working with such a talented, dedicated team and further growing Daily Mail Australia’s place in the market.”

Crawford has been editor of Daily Mail Australia since 2017 and was instrumental in launching the brand in 2014.

With over 25 years of experience in the media, he joined Daily Mail Australia as the first news editor from The Sunday Telegraph, and prior to this, he worked at the South China Morning Post and The Australian.

Crawford called editing Daily Mail Australia “the greatest privilege of my working life” and celebrated building a strong team of digital journalists over the last decade, breaking news stories and being “third commercially in one of the most competitive media markets in the world.”

He said: “What Felicity Hetherington doesn’t know about digital news, showbiz and lifestyle isn’t worth knowing.”

Crawford added: “I can’t wait to join the team in New York at such a pivotal time in the news cycle.”

MailOnline publisher and editor, Danny Groom, congratulated both Hetherington and Crawford on their moves within the company.

Groom said: “Barclay has been an outstanding editor who has driven Daily Mail Australia’s stunning success over recent years and has helped establish it as a major news brand. I have no doubt he will make a significant impact on our US website too.”

“Felicity has consistently proved she is a highly accomplished news executive with tremendous instincts, and I look forward to working with her in her new role,” he added.

Since launching in Australia almost 10 years ago, Daily Mail Australia has seen rapid growth. The latest Ipsos audience figures show the site is read by 9.67 million Australians – up 11.06% on the previous month.
