Budget Direct has launched a major community investment initiative across South Sydney, backing grassroots rugby league through a new multi-tiered program supporting thousands of young players and local clubs.
The Budget Direct Grassroots and Growth Program will support more than 7,000 junior players across competitions, including the South Sydney Junior League, Rabbitohs Touch and Rabbitohs Oztag.
Investing in community sport
The program includes funding for competitions as well as essential equipment such as goal post pads, corner post pads and marquees, helping clubs deliver stronger community participation for the 2026 season and beyond.
The initiative was officially launched at the South Sydney Rabbitohs Come and Try Day, where Budget Direct supported local engagement through branded merchandise and ticket giveaways.
Jonathan Kerr, Chief Growth Officer at Budget Direct, said the investment is focused on strengthening local communities.
“Community footy is part of the fabric of South Sydney… local clubs bring families together, keep kids active and create real community connections,” Kerr said.
Supporting the full ecosystem
Beyond players and clubs, Budget Direct has also extended its support to referees, becoming the exclusive apparel partner of the South Sydney District Rugby League Referees Association.
Kerr said supporting officials is a critical part of the grassroots ecosystem.
“You can’t have grassroots footy without referees… supporting them feels like a natural extension of our commitment to the local community.”
The association provides training, development pathways and mentorship for referees across the region.
Backing future players
Rabbitohs Chief Executive Officer Blake Solly said the investment will help grow the next generation of players and fans.
“Community clubs are the beating heart of footy… Budget Direct’s investment is helping to develop the next generation and ensure kids across South Sydney have the chance to experience the game,” Solly said.
Rabbitohs player Campbell Graham added the program will have a direct impact at club level.
“I came through local clubs and know how much that kind of support means… events like this are how you get kids falling in love with the game,” Graham said.
Extending impact beyond sponsorship
The initiative reflects Budget Direct’s broader approach to sports sponsorship, moving beyond branding to deliver tangible community outcomes.
This includes the Budget Direct Footy Charity Championship, which will inject $205,000 into community charities while engaging fans through competitions and prizes.
